(Eds: APNewsNow. With AP Photos.) By STEPHEN HAWKINS AP Sports Writer Another division title is within reach for the two-time defending American League champion Texas Rangers. The Rangers (87-59) have the AL's best record. But they are still in a tight division race, with the A's the closest chaser instead of the expected Los Angeles Angels. Texas had its last regular season off day on Monday. There are 16 games left after that, seven against the A's and six against the Angels. Oakland is only three games back in the division. The Angels, who added slugger Albert Pujols and former Texas lefty C.J. Wilson last winter, were 7 1/2 games back. Manager Ron Washington says he is confident in his team. Texas has won eight of its last nine series, and hasn't lost consecutive games in more than a month.

Rangers insert Perez in starting rotation

ARLINGTON, Texas The Texas Rangers have made a switch in their pitching rotation and will go with rookie left-hander Martin Perez Friday in Seattle. Perez will take the rotation spot of Scott Feldman (6-11). Feldman allowed six runs in 2 22 innings Saturday and was replaced by Perez, who pitched 4 13 scoreless innings. "He's been very aggressive," Texas manager Ron...

Rangers sign Lewis to deal for 2013

ARLINGTON, Texas Texas right-hander Colby Lewis, who is out for the season after tearing his right flexor tendon, has been signed for the 2013 season. Lewis, who would have been a free agent after the season, will make 2 million and could make up to 6 million if he reaches all of the incentives in his contract. Lewis had surgery to repair the flexor tendon July 27 and isn'...

Extensions and Injuries: Colby Lewis Gets a One-Year Extension From Rangers

Offering a contract extension to an injured player is a risky proposition.  It gets more risky when we're talking about baseball contracts.  In football, a team can essentially tear up a contract, void it, and start over if they don't like what they see from someone or if that player can't perform.  However, contracts in baseball are guaranteed.  Aside from incentive...

Angels score two runs on Rangers wild pitch

There was so much that went on in this play during Tuesday night's Rangers-Angels game. Texas pitcher Tanner Scheppers throws a wild pitch on just his second pitch of the evening, allowing Chris Iannetta to come home to score. Catcher Mike Napoli's threw came nowhere near Scheppers, covering the plate, and instead veered towards the left side of the plate, where it hit...

Harrison gets it done

Anyone who thinks Matt Harrison is the #3 guy in the playoff rotation probably needs to look again.  How is he NOT #2?  Only Yu Darvish looks sharper right now.  Those two are the guys I want out there the most if the Rangers make the post-season for the third time.  But enough about the post-season.  There’s still some work to do. Harrison did his part today.  And so did...

Rangers sign Colby Lewis to a one-year deal

The Texas Rangers have agreed to a one-year, $2 million deal with right handed pitcher Colby Lewis according to Jeff Wilson of the Fort-Worth Star Telegram. He adds that Lewis could make up to $4 million in incentives based on games started and active service time. Lewis, 33, went 6-6 with a 3.43 ERA, 1.4 HR/9, 1.2 BB/9 and 8.0 SO/9 in 105.0 innings before injuring his elbow in July...

Rangers can’t rally after Angels plate eight in 4th

I’m just going to come right out and say it — tonight’s game sucked.  OK, so the whole thing wasn’t terrible, but all I can really remember is that 4th inning.  That’s really the only inning that mattered in tonight’s game. Down 1-0 heading into the 3rd, the Rangers fired back with a Mike Napoli home run, a Mitch Moreland single and an Ian Kinsler two-run shot.  They...

DeidrePujols gives birth to daughter

Albert Pujols summer just got a little bit better. Pujols wife Deidre gave birth to the couples fifth child, a daughter, at 3:30 a.m. Sunday morning, the Angels announced. Daughter Esther Grace weighed 7 pounds, 3 ounces and measured 19 inches long. Pujols attended the birth, which followed the Angels 3-2 loss to the Kansas City Royals and was back at the ballpark in time for...

Pujols to miss Tuesday's Angels-Rangers game

Angels slugger Albert Pujols is not in the starting lineup for Tuesday nights game in Anaheim against the Texas Rangers because he remained in the Midwest to be with his wife, Deidre, who delivered the couples fifth child in a Kansas City-area hospital early Sunday morning. Pujols, who is hitting .282 with 30 home runs and a team-leading 96 runs batted in, played in Sundays game...

Game Recap 9/15/12 -- Gut Shot -- Angels 2 Royals 3

This being a family website I will try to refrain from swearing in a long, comma laden string of profanity over tonight's game. If the Angels don't make the playoffs there will be a lot of reasons why. The terrible start highlighted by Albert Pujols worst month as a professional ballplayer. The inconsistent seasons by the vaunted starting rotation. The stubborn refusal...
