We bid goodbye to HoHoKam Stadium as the Cubs ended their Cactus League schedule and played their final home game at the old ballpark before moving to their new digs in Mesa.  There’s very little reason to care whether the Cubs won or lost this game (they lost), as most of the starters were out by the fourth inning anyway.  However, that doesn’t mean we can’t get excited at great plays and the prospect of baseball (the kind that counts) in a few days. While we were happy to watch Alfonso Soriano obliterate a baseball today, the highlight that they didn’t put on the internets was one that we would rather have seen.  In the bottom of the sixth inning, Brett Jackson had been brought in to replace Soriano and led off the inning with a walk.  That is what he’s good at, because he still needs to improve on that whole “make contact with the ball” thing.  The next batter, Ty Wright, bombed a loud out to deep center.  Jackson alertly tagged up and made it into second base on the deep flyout.  Then, with one out, Dioner Navarro hit a ball in front of Jackson to the third baseman.  The throw went to first to force Navarro out, but Jackson took off on the play and made it into third.  The first baseman’s throw to third base was off line and allowed Jackson to get up and trot home. Normally I’d love it if a run was scored the traditional way, with a base hit or as part of a long ball.  But hey, a run is a run and I’m glad some smart baserunning was able to generate that run.  Now if only they had a video of it.
