Few people know the St Louis Browns franchise started in 1901 as the Milwaukee Brewers, before moving to St Louis for the 1902 season. Prior to 1944, the Browns had finished in 2nd place just twice. This was a franchise that struggled for years, because the better players wanted to play for the Cardinals, the team that was known as a winner. The Browns, who moved to Baltimore before the 1954 season, have the 1944 season to look back on. Only Babe Martin, a 24 year old OF who got into 2 games and had 4 ABs (3 hits), is still alive according to www.baseballreference.com. This was a big season for the franchise, their first ever AL Pennant and a chance to beat the cross town St Louis Cardinals in the fall classic. However, the Browns were in a fortunate position. From 1942-1945, the United States of America were in the midst of World War II. As more time went on, more MLB players left to join the cause.
