After leading the minor league in strikeouts in 2011, Edwar Cabrera has looked good in AA for the Colorado Rockies, though he has not been fanning hitters at the same rate with 68 strikeouts in 83 innings of work. He has posted a 3.25 ERA with a .192 batting average against thanks to a devastating changeup. He has been victimized by the long ball this season with 14 home runs allowed so he will need to cut down on that ration moving forward.

Right-handed starting pitcher Daniel Corcino was rated the top pitching prospect in the Cincinnati Reds organization heading into 2012 and he has pitched just okay this season with a 3.77 ERA in 12 starts. Batters are hitting .252 against him and he currently sports a 1.42 WHIP thanks to 28 walks allowed in 62 innings of work. It looks like he will not be ready to make an impact until the end of the 2013 season.

Corcino’s new teammate Tony Cingrani is closing the gap after putting up stellar numbers in High-A with a 1.11 ERA in 56 2/3 innings with 71 strkeouts. After pitching in relief at Rice University in his senior season, Cingrani has had little difficulty as a starter and has a 1.42 ERA through two starts at AA with 14 strikeouts in 12 2/3 innings of action.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have several pitching prospects on the horizon but none of them at the upper levels have really taken a step forward in 2012. Ethan Martin has probably been the best of the bunch so far with a 3.38 ERA at Double-A and 66 strikeouts in 69 1/3 innings, but walks continue to be an issue for him with 37 free passes issued. So despite holding hitters for a .204 batting average against, he is going to need to improve his control before he is ready to tackle Triple-A hitters.

The Reds already have one left-hander in their bullpen striking out batters at a high rate and they soon could be adding a second player to their relief corps in the form of Donnie Joseph, a third round pick from the 2009 draft. Joseph was recently promoted to Triple-A after posting a 0.89 ERA in 30 1/3 innings at Double-A with eight walks and 46 strikeouts. As long as he is able to maintain his control, something he struggled with in 2011, he could have some value in NL-only formats if Aroldis Chapman was ever moved into the rotation.

The Arizona Diamondbacks promoted pitcher David Holmberg to Double-A recently. A second round pick in the 2009 draft, he was acquired by the D-Backs in the Edwin Jackson trade. Holmberg had a 2.99 ERA in 12 starts at High A ball, with only 14 walks allowed and 86 strikeouts in 78 1/3 innings. He went six innings in his first start in Mobile, allowing five runs with five strikeouts.

First basemen Jonathan Singleton has been solid at Double-A this season with 11 home runs and 40 RBI in 207 at bats at the age of 20. Singleton is slugging .536 on the season with 13 doubles, two triples and he has also added two stolen bases. He should be in line to make some noise early in 2013 with the lack of offense in the Houston Astros lineup.
