Remember me? Probably not. I write articles about the best individual seasons at each position for each team, but my last article was a couple site modifications ago. I am continuing my series with this year’s must-watch team, the Seattle Mariners. Enjoy!
Catcher – Kenji Johjima, 2007
In 2006, 30 year old rookie Kenji Johjima became the first Japanese player to catch full-time in the Major Leagues and he didn’t disappoint, hitting .291 with 18 homeruns and finishing fourth in an impressive AL Rookie of the Year vote that included Justin Verlander, Jonathon Papelbon, Francisco Liriano, Jered Weaver, Nick Markakis, and Ian Kinsler. Although his bat slipped a little in 2007, Johjima improved his defense to the tune of a 47% caught-stealing percentage and just 2 errors in 863 chances behind the plate while still providing above average offense from the catching position.
