Sometimes, age is just a number. Some people age well and some people age badly. It really just depends on how you take care of yourself. When it comes to age in professional sports, getting older is a bit of a curse. There’s a point in a players professional career where teams are no longer willing to pay players the big money or sometimes any money. As Major League Baseball Spring Training comes to an end, we’re usually concentrating on finding out which young phenoms will be making the Opening Day roster. For a couple minutes, lets take a look at one of the older players who’s trying to hang on to his lifelong dream for one more season, Jamie Moyer.

At 49 years and 4 months old, Moyer is trying to earn a spot on the Colorado Rockies starting rotation. In 9 innings so far this spring, Moyer has looked very solid going 2-0 with a 1.00 era. Strong numbers after having to miss all of last season after going through Tommy John surgery. With the Philadelphia Phillies in 2010, Moyer went 9-9 with a 4.84 era. If he can duplicate those stats in 2012, it puts him in the running for the 5th man in the Rockies rotation.

Jim Caple of ESPN put together an interesting list on the 49 things you need to know about Moyer.  One of the most intriguing facts in Caple’s article talked about Moyer’s velocity and the fact that he’s never consistently thrown faster than 82-83 mph in his 24-year career. With the velocity of an above average high school pitcher, Moyer has been able to win a total of 267 games in the bigs, while posting a 4.24 career era. Moyer shows that there’s a lot more to pitching then just your heater. Check out the rest of the 49 things here.
