PLAYERS: Evan Gattis
TEAMS: Atlanta Braves
Thursday’s game for the Atlanta Braves was full of plays that have made up the team’s season almost a month into the game: timely hits, a quality outing from the pitching staff, and balls flying out of the ballpark to help the Braves secure another victory, this one over the Pittsburgh Pirates by the final score of 6-4. Along with home runs from the Uptons and Chris Johnson came a blast in the 8th inning from catcher Evan Gattis, who stepped up from the bench to hit a go-ahead two run blast in his first career pinch hit, which would ultimately secure Atlanta’s thirteenth win in fifteen games so far this season. While one can argue that the credit for the Braves’ hot start to the season lies in the hands—or bat—of Justin Upton or in the excellent play of the team’s bullpen, you cannot discount how important Gattis has been to this team in the absence of perennial All-Star Brian McCann. The statistics for Gattis in twelve games are ridiculous, as the Dallas, Texas native currently ho...

Braves’ Brian McCann faces rehab setback

Atlanta Braves catcher Brian McCann has been rehabbing since undergoing shoulder surgery. This recovery process was halted earlier in the week when McCann had to be examined because of wrist tenderness, according to Ray Glier of MLB.com. McCann was rehabbing in Orlando, but he returned to Atlanta to have his wrist examined recently after he experienced discomfort. The...

Cory Gearrin’s plaid suit

Pictures and Video on the FOX 5 website 1. I am so amused this is "news". 2. CG = Cory Gearrin / Cary Grant, right? 3. Glad to know Freddie approves. :D 4. In all seriousness, I think he's pulling it off.  I like it.

Braves Pitchers Cracking the WHIP

Braves pitchers have been lights out this season Braves pitching has been outstanding in 2013 and the team ERA (2.19) is a full run less than the next best team in the National League (LA Dodgers 3.26).  ERA is the stat most fans use to measure pitching, but WHIP (walks plus hits divided by innings pitched) is the stat that many baseball experts think gives a better indication of...

Atlanta Braves Sign Nick Weglarz To Minor League Deal

MLB News: On Friday the Atlanta Braves signed outfielder Nick Weglarz to a minor league deal. While it is not known where he will be assigned, we are assuming that it will be Triple-A Gwinnett. The one-time solid prospect who started his career at the age of 17 had fallen out of favor with the Cleveland Indians and was in camp with the Tampa Bay Rays this spring. Once displaying...

Atlanta Braves

The Atlanta Braves are 11-1. They just swept the Nationals and won 9-0 last night. Justin Upton is hitting .340 with 7 home runs. Chris Johnson, Paul Maholm, and Jayson Heyward are hot all while Freddie Freeman is on the DL. “It’s early,” manager Fredi Gonzalez said. “I don’t think we’re going to play .998 baseball the rest of the way, but it sure is better than 1-11...

Andrew McCutchen bobbles his head while holding his bobblehead (GIF)

On Saturday, April 20, the Pittsburgh Pirates will be giving out an Andrew McCutcheon bobblehead — referred to as “Clutch Bobblehead” in a nod to McCutcheon’s nickname — to the first 25,000 fans through the gates at PNC Park for the team’s game against the Atlanta Braves. The Andrew McCutcheon bobblehead features Rawlings Gold Glove and Louisville Silver Slugger awards...

Hotlanta!

Yes the Braves lost yesterday afternoon to the Royals but it was bound to happen wasn’t it? Teams don’t go on 10 game winning streaks this early in the year. And when it does happen that a team has a 10 game win streak this early, it typically does not include a series sweep of the team picked to win the division ahead of you (Nationals) on the road (Washington). Teams don...

Chip Caray makes totally original mom's basement joke

Atlanta Braves TV play by play man Chip Caray is one of the foremost examples of a person having a reputation based solely on his name as opposed to his actual ability. During Wednesday's Braves-Royals broadcast (which was simulcast on MLB Network), Fox Sports South reporter Tom Hart broke down Baseball Prospectus's updated playoff odds, which have the Braves with a 71% chance...

Homers Of The Week: Ramos & Upton pimp homers, Upton also hits a ball very far

Wilson Ramos and Justin Upton tie for the best homer pimp of the week. —– Evan Gattis’ first MLB hit, homer, and bat flip —– So yeah … that happened. Anthony Rizzo came close to hitting it into the water… …Carlos Gonzalez did.

Bring on the Braves

The Pirates' long homestand concludes with a four-game set against the Braves, who are almost certainly the best team in the early part of the 2013 season. The Braves are currently 12-2 and they've outscored opponents 68-27 (that is, the most runs scored and the fewest allowed) on the season. They're just steamrolling teams pretty much every night. Of course, the...

Video: Clint Hurdle on Evan Gattis; Pedro’s Home Run

Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle discusses Atlanta’s Evan Gattis and his eighth inning pinch-hit home run. Pedro Alvarez speaks to the media about his fourth inning home run, his first of the 2013 season.

Game 15: Braves 6 Pirates 4

For almost the entire night, the Pirates had to play catch up in this game against the Braves. For most of the game, they did just that. BJ Upton lead the game off with a home run, the Pirates tied it on a sac fly. After the Pirates took a 2-1 lead on a long Russell Martin home run, the Braves took a 3-2 lead on a Chris Johnson homer. The Pirates tied the game back up on a moster...

Game 17 Preview: Pirates vs. Braves

Braves (13-3) at Pirates (8-8) 7:05 PM–PNC Park, Pittsburgh MLB.com Gameday TV: ROOT The Bucs go for two in a row against the Braves tonight at PNC. It’s Andrew McCutchen bobblehead night, so there should be a solid crowd (which is good, since there haven’t been any good crowds since the opener). A win would clinch a series split for the Bucs, which would be a very strong result...

Game 16 Preview: Pirates vs. Braves
