Found December 05, 2012 on Bay Sports Nut:
The Giants locked up two crucial players in the last two days. Angel Pagan signed for $40 million and four years and Marco Scutaro signed for a $20 million 3-year deal. These are excellent moves on Brian Sabean’s part. Without Angel Pagan and Marco Scutaro, the Giants don’t make it to the World Series. It’s that simple. Although Pagan is 31, and had only two out of seven seasons with 150 or more games started, he transformed in a Giants uniform in 2012, and became a beast when he assumed the leadoff position in early August. His play and presence lifted the Giants many times during their championship chase. Marco “blockbuster” Scutaro, as his teammates deemed him, was the NLCS MVP, and will enter the 2013 season with a 21-game hitting streak intact. He was money the minute he put on a Giants uniform.  Though Scutaro’s in the twilight of his career, he is a consummate professional, and brings to the team consistency at the plate and with the glove. Many Giants credit Scutaro for inspiring them to raise their level of play offensively and defensively. The Giants offered Pagan a nice $5 million signing bonus, and ramped up his salary from $ 7 million in 2013, and $9 million in 2014 and ’15, to $10 million in the last year of the contract. Marco Scutaro was looking for a three-year deal from the beginning, and the Giants delivered. The St. Louis Cardinals offered a two-year deal, as they are looking to fill second base. The signing of Scutaro is a nice sign from Brian Sabean that he values the chemistry and contributions that Pagan and Scutaro brought to the championship team. They hit one-two in the order, and caused damage throughout September and October. The 2012 Giants are left largely intact, except for left field. There is little word on who the Giants are considering to play left. They’ve said publicly that Gregor Blanco will see considerable time out there. Blanco’s defensive ability is stunning. Without him Matt Cain might not have had a perfect game. Without Blanco in the playoffs, they don’t win. He was clutch at the right time, but his production was up and down during the regular season. The question is can he deliver an entire season? That’s a big question mark. The Giants have only two items left on their offseason list: In Order. Find a left fielder Resolve Brian Wilson’s free agency: sign him or find another power closer. The post The Giants lock up Pagan and Scutaro appeared first on Bay Area Sports Nut.

A Toast To Signing Pagan

That almost might be the most important part of signing Angel Pagan: Not getting Shane Victorino. This is not to minimize Pagan.  Pagan was an important part of the championship team, and him getting hot at the right time late in the season helped get to the playoffs, almost as much as Buster Posey’s 2nd half.  His leadoff home run in Game 4 of the NLDS is a forgotten and important...

With the deal, the Giants have retained their Nos. 1 and 2 hitters in Angel Pagan and Scutaro. The Giants re-signed Pagan on Monday for $40 million over four years. Earlier Tuesday, the St. Louis Cardinals emerged as a surprise player...

Angel Pagan Giants: How OF’s Fantasy Value looks in return to SF

Angel Pagan should make enough to buy all the new shades he needs. Image courtesy of flickr. We already knew that Angel Pagan has an oxymoronic sounding name. But now we also know that Pagan has re-signed with the Giants. There’s obviously not much speculation on how he can do in San Francisco, or in the National League West. He just produced a fantasy season of 95 runs, 8 homers...

Free agent center fielder Angel Pagan, a cornerstone of the San Francisco Giants' World Series championship run, has reached an agreement with the Giants on a four-year contract that will pay him $40 million, multiple media outlets reported Monday. Marco Scutaro agrees to three-year deal with Giants

Hours after we discussed the lunacy surrounding teams courting Marco Scutaro, the free agent middle infielder has agreed to return to the Giants on a three-year deal worth $20 million. This is a slight drop from the three years and $24 million Scutaro was rumored to have on the table from the Giants earlier tonight. As opposed to a near 50% raise that Scutaro would have gotten...

What I Think The Phillies Will Put Under The Tree

I recently said I didn't want us to continue to pursue Angel Pagan at the price he was commanding. I really don't want us to. Pagan's above average, but above average is a bad four year bet. Rosenthal is reporting Pagan and the Giants are close to a deal. I...

Giants Sign Angel Pagan to Fill Critical Role in 2013 and Beyond

The San Francisco Giants took a huge step in solidifying their 2013 team by signing center field free agent Angel Pagan to a four year $40 million deal. Pagan was a team leader and an effective lead-off hitter in the Giants' drive to win the 2012 World Series. No doubt General Manager Brian Sabean paid for at least one more year than he wanted to with Pagan, who will be...

The Giants bring back Brian Sabean and Bruce Bochy, while they try to re-sign Marco Scutaro. With the hot stove heating up for the Giants this offseason, they did make a big move today by picking up Bruce Bochy and Brian Sabean’s 2013 option. Bochy has managed the Giants for the past six seasons and holds a 503-469 record. He led the team with a well-managed bullpen in both the...

Good-bye

Chris, who runs the ESPN-affiliated Bay City Ball, has invited me to write for his site and I’ve accepted. Needless to say, I’m very excited about the opportunity to start writing over there. My first post, on the Angel Pagan signing, is already up. Anyway, this also means the end of Giants Nirvana. I’m not good with good-byes — and besides, this isn’t entirely good-bye...
