With the sweepstakes to sign Japanese righty Masahiro Tanaka underway, it appears a surprise front-runner has emerged out of nowhere. Multiple reports suggest the Seattle Mariners appear to be the favorites for the 25-year-old pitcher and could run away with the competition. Ben Badler of Baseball America is always clued in to the international signing market and he lists the Mariners...

Yankees: Tanaka – Tanaka – Tanaka

Is anyone else sick of hearing rumors about where Masahiro Tanaka is going to land? (Photo credit: Wikipedia) The New York Yankees know that they need to land this 25-year old Japanese phenom. Yes, signing a pitcher who has never faced MLB hitters is risky. And the Yankees know this first hand after signing Kei Igawa back in 2007 to a five-year, $46 million contract. Igawa played...

Masahiro Tanaka might bring some flair to Major League Baseball. Tanaka, who officially is a free agent after being posted by his Japanese club, surely will be missed in his native country. Teams have spent the last year preparing for the opportunity to sign Masahiro Tanaka this offseason. Red Sox News: Tanaka and Berry

We learned two Red Sox reports yesterday: One came as no surprise and the other, well, kind of was one. First up, it's been reported that the Red Sox will not pursue Japanese ace Masahiro Tanaka, who has been posted to the MLB for the bidding price of $20 million. For three major reasons this doesn't really surprise me at all: 1. The Red Sox already have a surplus of...

Report: Angels Very Interested in Masahiro Tanaka

The Angels’ biggest offseason move might be their next one. The Angels are very interested in Masahiro Tanaka, according to Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times. The Halos already have added Tyler Skaggs, Hector Santiago and Mark Mulder to a rotation mix that includes Jered Weaver, C.J. Wilson, Garrett Richards and Joe Blanton, but the moves reportedly won’t preclude L.A. from...

Signing Tanaka, extending Trout and mutual exclusivity

A popular sentiment expressed around the MWAH comments and in other parts of the Angels blogosphere is that the Angels should abandon their pursuit of Japanese pitcher Masahiro Tanaka and instead turn their attention to signing Mike Trout to a contract extension that keeps him in Halo Red for a very long time. That line of logic dictates that the Angels are better off saving the...

The Arizona Diamondbacks cannot be ruled out as major players for Japanese right-hander Masahiro Tanaka, not after giving serious consideration to free-agent outfielder Shin-Soo Choo. While the D-backs did not make Choo a formal offer, they knew his price and likely would have intensified their interest if they had failed to acquire outfielder Mark Trumbo, according to major league...
