In Pittsburgh, fans know that just because there is a name at the top slot in the Pirates pitching rotation, does not necessarily mean they have an ace.  Over past few seasons the Pirates have had pitchers with promise like Zack Duke, Paul Maholm, Ian Snell, Oliver Perez, and Kip Wells listed as their number one pitcher over the past seven seasons.  All of these players looked like they would add an arm at the top of the rotation that could be counted on every fifth day.  Headed into this season, many expected Paul Maholm to get that designation for the first time since 2009.  Surprisingly, the 2011 season featured Kevin Correia as the guy on top for the Pirates Pitching Staff.  Clint Hurdle went with Correia over Paul Maholm.  So it’s Correia’s job to face each team’s best pitcher when he steps on the mound.Correia impressed on Opening Day against the Chicago Cubs.
