PLAYERS: Jed Lowrie
TEAMS: Oakland Athletics
With the trade deadline quickly approaching, the Oakland Athletics have been pretty quiet. As of now, the Athletics lineup looks pretty solid. The A’s have been both great offensively and defensively this season, which has allowed them to take a two game lead in the AL West before the All-Star break. It is definitely not necessary for the Athletics to partake in a trade this year, especially if it could throw off their current success streak. And with general manager Billy Beane making the decisions, the Athletics will not trade unless it comes at the right price. Jed Lowrie If the Athletics wanted to trade, one area that could use some new blood is short stop. Do not get me wrong, Jed Lowrie has been great this season with a .295 average and 37 RBIs. But his defensive skills are lacking. There has been some talk that Athletics were interested in Chicago White Sox Alexei Ramirez. With a stronger arm than Lowrie, Ramirez would also bring a solid bat and quick feet with 19 stolen bases out of 23 attempts this season. However, the only concerning factor is Ramirez’s salary, which is an escalating income over the next two seasons. This could be too expensive for this small market team. Then there is second base. Eric Sogard is a decent defenseman, but he is lacking when he steps up the plate. With only 1 home run this season, it was not a surprise when the Athletics brought up Grant Green from Triple-A. However, with Green’s first MLB appearance being less than great, the A’s could benefit from a change at second base. But with no names floating around in the trade rumor mills, it is not clear who could fill this void. The Oakland Athletics are not known for wheeling and dealing big trades close to the deadline. With all of the success they have had this season so far, it does not seem as though there is a need for any change. Unless there is a player who has both a low salary and a high success potential, I do not think the A’s will be trading any players before the July 31st deadline.

Cespedes smashes windshield in HR Derby

Two Chevrolet Silverado’s were placed in center field at Citi Field and while twitter argues over which balls actually hit the truck there was no doubting that Yoenis Cespedes smashed the windshield. While the smash happened in the second round, Cespedes actually hit enough home runs to qualify for the finals in the first round but his second round was enough to earn the American...

Cuban Missile Crisis: All-Star Home Run Derby ‘13

It wasn’t the Russians, it was Yoenis Cespedes of the Oakland Athletics. Selected for the All-Star Home Run Derby event only, Cespedes didn’t need to save his energy for tomorrow night’s game. The result was a display of raw hitting talent that made Yoenis Cespedes look a whole lot like Bo Jackson. Cespedes started his quest for the Derby crown with a tidy seventeen...

Donaldson Fuels A’s Walk-Off Win

The pies were flying Sunday afternoon as the A’s recovered from a slow start to come from behind and beat the Red Sox in extra innings, and head into the All-Star break in first place in the AL west for the first time since 2006. Josh Donaldson was the recipient of the customary celebratory pie, as he drove in all three of the A’s runs on the day, including the game winning RBI...

A’s Closer Grant Balfour Added to A.L. All-Star Team

Oakland A’s closer Grant Balfour has been added to the American League All-Star team by Tigers manager Jim Leyland. As three pitchers on the ASG roster (Detroit’s Justin Verlander, the A’s Bartolo Colon and the Mariners’ Hisashi Iwakuma) are pitching today, they were ineligible to pitch on Tuesday’s game – so Balfour was tapped to replace Colon on the A.L. squad. The...

Bartolo Colon smacks Robinson Cano’s son silly

credit Congratulations to Oakland A’s slugger, Yoenis Cespedes, for becoming the new Home Run Derby King.  Cespedes beat out Washington Nationals young phenom, Bryce Harper, by hitting 32 bombs out.  But the knockout punch came from Yoenis’ Oakland A’s teammate, Bartolo Colon, who overzealous celebrated a little too much.  Right before Colon hugged...

Athletics 3, Red Sox 2(11)

Josh Donaldson performed like an All-Star, though he'll be spending his break somewhere other than Citi Field New York. Donaldson homered, then blooped an RBI single with two outs in the 11th inning as the Oakland Athletics beat Boston 3-2 Sunday despite a stellar start by Red Sox rookie Brandon Workman. ''I got jammed and was able to dink it in,'' Donaldson...

Bartolo Colon accidentally slapped Robinson Cano’s son following Home Run Derby

Kids need to learn to steer clear of grown men when they’re in full on bro mode. Robinson Cano’s son learned this the hard way, as he was the unwilling recipient of a Bartolo Colon slap to the head as the A’s pitcher gave 2013 MLB Home Run Derby champion Yoenis Cespedes a congratulatory hug. On second glance Colon’s head smack looks a little deliberate. Maybe Bob’s Blitz...

Today in trolling headlines: LA Times gets its Bleacher Report on

By now, we all now how this internet thing works. Juice up your post with SEO goodness, and then attach a click-baity headline that attracts eyeballs, whether it’s accurate or has anything to do with the story or not. This tactic is pretty much how Bleacher Report built its revenue monster. Now, it seems, more traditional outlets are getting in on the action. After Yoenis Cespedes...
