Los Angeles Angel Alberto Callaspo is traded for Oakland Athletic Grant Green And they have done it! The Oakland Athletics have found a deal they like and have traded just before the trade deadline. On Tuesday, the Athletics decided to trade Grant Green, one of their top prospective players, to the Los Angeles Angels for their third baseman Alberto Callaspo. The trade became official when Callaspo was pulled from the Angels-Texas Rangers game after the fourth inning on Tuesday night. Green was a first-round pick for the Oakland Athletics in 2009 and was doing great in Triple-A up in Sacramento. This season, he had been hitting .325 with a .500 slugging percentage, and 11 home runs in 87 games. Additionally, he has experience at all sorts of positions ranging from the outfield to short base. When Green joined the Athletics lineup right before the All-Star break, they placed him at second base. However, his major league stint was short, for it only lasted five games as he went 0-for-15 at bat. It is rumored that Billy Beane has been eyeing Callaspo for awhile now and was just waiting for the right deal. Callaspo was signed with the Angels through 2014 at $4.87 million. This price was just right for Billy Beane, and, along with a .252 batting average, five home runs and 36 RBI this season, Callaspo seems like a perfect fit. The Athletics are looking to put him at second base, which is understandable since this has been a position that Athletics have struggled with this season. There is one problem. Callaspo has been playing third base regularly for the past three season. At 30 years old, Callaspo has been playing third base for quite some time, and played this position exclusively for the Angels. However, he does have experience at second base and has played 217 games at second base throughout his career. Hopefully making the switch from third to second will not be difficult for Callaspo and will ultimately be beneficial for the Oakland Athletics. Even though A’s second baseman Eric Sogard has been on a hot streak lately, he still struggles against left handed pitchers. With Callaspo being a switch-hitter, he could possibly pick up where Sogard leaves off. Now with a six game lead in the AL West, this trade is just a little extra bonus for the Oakland Athletics as they sail toward the MLB postseason.
