Since the new MLB collective bargaining agreement has been released to the public there has been no shortage of good reads on the subject. I will not touch on all the specifics here; if you want a comprehensive look, Maury Brown has it here and Peter Abraham has a quicker break down here. There is a lot to like about the new agreement, including a HGH test and some real progress in health policy. However, the general reaction has been mixed at best and it isn’t hard to see why.
A few of the new policies are going to be more controversial and the Red Sox may be in the center of these controversies. Most obviously, the expansion of the playoffs will directly impact the Red Sox. Under the newly expanded Wild Card system, the Red Sox would have played a one game playoff against a division rival in each of the past two seasons instead of missing out on the playoffs.
Boston fans will certainly like that change, but another consequence of this new playoff system will also have a huge impac...

Vote: Which Free Agent Should Be at Top of Red Sox' Shopping List?
Black Friday came at the crack of dawn (or midnight in some cases) on Friday, and with it, comes the beginning of the holiday shopping season. However, the holiday shopping season in Major League Baseball has been going on for a month already, and the Red Sox are among teams still looking for something to give their fans this winter. Ben Cherington's first offseason as general...
Red Sox Offer Arbitration to David Ortiz & Dan Wheeler
According to several media outlets, the Boston Red Sox have decided to offer arbitration to David Ortiz and Dan Wheeler. They had until 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday night to do so.
This means a few things for the Red Sox.
With the new CBA done, Ortiz is still a Type A free agent. So if he decides to sign with another team, the Red Sox will still receive two draft picks as compensation...
Top 50 Prospects: #37 – Will Middlebrooks
#37 Will Middlebrooks
Boston Red Sox
DOB: 9/9/1988
Previous Rank: NR
ETA: 2012
Middlebrooks collected most of his at-bats for Double-A Portland in 2011. As a 22-year-old across three levels, including 16 games in the International League, Middlebrooks slashed .285/.328/.506. Obviously from those numbers, plate discipline is a big issue with Middlebrooks because he does not really...
The Red Sox are Moving at a Snail's Pace
So, what have the Red Sox done to improve the team that did not make the playoffs last season? No a whole lot. The team still has no manager while the Cubs and Cardinals have both filled their vacancies. Pap was allowed to walk without being made an offer and now the negotiations with Big Papi which seemed to be coming to a head have gone silent. Not as big of a deal but still...
Overture: Ortiz Offered Arbitration
Pete Abraham calls the offer a "significant overture."Ortiz has until Dec. 7 to accept or decline. If he accepts, he would be Red Sox property for 2012. If the sides could not come to an agreement, a one-year contract would be determined via arbitration.(snip)Erik Bedard, Trever Miller, Tim Wakefield, J.D. Drew, Conor Jackson, and Jason Varitek were not offered arbitration...
Manager Search Down to Two
The Red Sox have narrowed the search for a manager down to two candidates; Bobby Valentine and Gene Lamont. Everything points to Valentine being the front-runner and Lamont only there if a deal can't be worked out with Bobby V. Look for the final announcement to come on Monday or Tuesday.
Jays Wanted Buchholz for Farrell
No wonder the talks with Toronto about bringing John Farrell back to Boston to become the new manager did not go anywhere. The Jays asking price was Clay Buchholz. There is no way the Red Sox would be willing to offer anything close to that deal so they were forced to look elsewhere.

The Red Sox won’t be hiring their next manager today, but they made progress on the managerial front this week. Here’s the latest on Boston’s search and here are some updates on their division rivals...
