Found February 20, 2013 on Red Hot Mama:
Last week, Scott Rolen announced that he would not be returning to the Cincinnati Reds for the start of the 2013 season. “Right now I’m simply not ready to make a commitment. I would like to leave my options open, without closing any doors. I am looking forward to all of the challenges, both personally and professionally, I will face in the future.” The statement is the definition of non-committal. Rolen was unable to commit to another full season and also unable to commit to never playing professional baseball again. Aging in baseball is not an easy thing for the player, and no one demonstrates that more than Rolen. After multiple shoulder injuries and surgeries, he arrived in Cincinnati a shell of his former self. But he managed a great season in 2010 and pushed the Reds to their first winning record in a decade and their first playoff appearance in 15 years. Unfortunately, he was never able to recapture that and performed poorly in both 2011 and 2012. The decision has to be hard....

Talking with Cincinnati Reds third base prospect Travis ‘Moose’ Mattair

A few weeks ago I was able to talk with Cincinnati Reds third base prospect Travis ‘Moose’ Mattair. He had a real breakout season in 2012 and hopes to build upon that for 2013. You can follow him on twitter @mooser3226 RML: Since being drafted in 2007 you have seen two organizations and gone on to play college basketball. Has that journey helped your career? Travis Mattair: It...

Reds exercise right to block Johnny Cueto from WBC

Reds ace Johnny Cueto won't be participating in the World Baseball Classic this year. However, it certainly won't be due to a lack of desire. The team reportedly exercised their right to prevent Cueto from playing because he ended last season with an injury. Major League Baseball has a provision in place that allows franchises to do just that. Cincinnati's decision...

Votto to join the Canadian World Baseball Classic team

It took a while, but Joey Votto has finally decided to be on the roster for Canada’s World Baseball Classic team. That does not mean he will definitely play. “As far as playing, I’m going to have to wait until the day before to decide,” Votto said. Good. He better stay healthy and uninjured, otherwise there will be serious repercussions for America’s hat. As for the other...

Video: Baseball Tonight crew pays a visit to the Reds in camp

The ESPN Baseball Tonight crew made a stop in Goodyear, Ariz. on Tuesday to feature our beloved Redlegs. Watch as Jon Sciambi, Tim Kurkjian, and former Reds third basemen Aaron Boone voice their opinion on a variety of hot topics including Aroldis Chapman's move from the bullpen to the rotation, what newly-acquired outfielder Shin-Soo Choo brings to the team, and the status of...

What kind of season can be expected out of Mat Latos?

The first season for Mat Latos in Cincinnati was by all means a successful one. The right-hander was as good as advertised last season en route to posting a 14-4 record and 3.48 ERA in a career-high 33 starts. There were initial concerns on how Latos would handle the transition from pitching in spacious PETCO Park to the hitter's paradise known as Great American Ball Park...

What to watch for in Cincinnati Reds spring training: Position Players

All players should be in camp at this point. Earlier this week I looked at the pitching side of things, which is a lot more interesting than the position player side of things where there aren’t really any jobs open for the taking as the Reds are only replacing two players from the division winning team from 2012. Shin-Soo Choo will take over in the outfield, whether or not he...

Phillips happy to be batting second for Reds

GOODYEAR, Ariz. Brandon Phillips isnt parading around the Cincinnati Reds clubhouse holding aloft a placard that reads, Im No. 2.But he is OK with the fact that hell bat second in manager Dusty Bakers order and that if all goes well hell be No. 2 all year, giving him a sense of offensive stability. It hasnt always been that way and thats his own fault because the 31-year-old second...

Reports: Joey Votto expected to play for Team Canada in WBC

Although no official announcement has been made yet, two Canadian media outlets are reporting that Reds All-Star first basemen Joey Votto is likely to represent Team Canada during next month's World Baseball Classic. The Toronto Star published a report late Tuesday with quotes from Canadian baseball director Greg Hamilton, who says he is "confident" that Votto is...

Jim Bowden calls Shin Soo Choo a worthwhile risk for Reds

When the Reds acquired Shin-Shoo Choo from the Indians this offseason many believed Cincinnati basically swapped better offensive production from the leadoff spot in exchange for a shaky, unproven, defensive center fielder. Count former general manager and current ESPN writer Jim Bowden as one of them. The Reds have struggled to find a legitimate leadoff hitter for several years...

Spring training baseball starts today

The Cincinnati Reds play their first exhibition game of the 2013 Spring Training season today at 3:05pm when they face the Cleveland Indians. The starter? Tony Cingrani. Cingrani, the 23-year-old left-hander, was the Reds’ best pitcher in the minors last year. He went 10-4 with a 1.73 ERA at Single-A Bakersfield and Double-A Pensacola. Because of the World Baseball Classic, Spring...

Player Profile #71: Mat Latos | SP | CIN

At this time last year I was telling everyone who would listen to stay away from Mat Latos. In two full season with the Padres, Latos had posted fantastic FIPs of 3.00 and 3.16, but FIP doesn’t account for the ballpark in which he pitched half of his games so his better-than-average 8.0% and 7.3% HR/FB rates weren’t adjusted to the higher league average marks. For that kind of...

Joey Votto will play in WBC for Canada

Joey Votto will play for Canada in the upcoming World Baseball Classic. The news comes after weeks of will-he-or-won’t-he. Ultimately Votto has choose to play for Canada. While Votto says his knee is not quite normal yet, doctors have him clearance to play on it. Votto was limited to 111 games last season but was productive while on the field. The Reds first-basemen batted .337...

Pete Rose releases statement pleading for Topps to restore card ommissions

Topps created a buzz last week when the card company announced that it would no longer acknowledge the achievements of Pete Rose on the back of today's baseball cards. On Tuesday, the Cincinnati legend released a series of statements pleading for Topps and Major League Baseball to overturn the decision. "I am not asking for anyone to feel sorry for me. I am asking only...
