This season has been quite a roller coaster ride for Hunter Pence. And Tuesday’s extra inning win over his old team, the Astros, was a microcosm of his year so far. Ups - Pence gave the Phillies a 3-0 lead in the 6th inning with a solo home run to right field. It was the first time in a long time he got ahead of pitch and sent it the other way. Brian Schneider had a 2-run homer in the 1st inning which accounted for the other 2 runs to that point. Downs – With a 3-1 score in the 9th, thanks to 8 amazing innings pitched from Cliff Lee, the wheels began to fall off. Chad Qualls did his Jekyll and Hyde routine again, giving up hits left and right. But even after the Astros crept closer, cutting the lead to 3-2, Hunter Pence had another bad moment. On a single to right with a man on third, Pence fielded the ball nicely, freezing the runner. But after he exchanged the ball to his hand, it fell out off his hand, bounced off his knee and skidded away, allowing the run to score and tie the g...

Phillies Walk Off On Pence Home Run

Hunter Pence redeems himself with walk-off home run to power Phillies to 4-3 win in 10. Phillies vs. Astros 5/15/12 Quick Hits: Coming into today's game, Cliff Lee had not pitched a winning decision since September 26, 2011. Unfortunately, he will have to wait until his next scheduled start to break that streak. Despite coming out of the game after 8 innings with a 3-1 lead...

Jake Diekman Could Signal A Bright Future for Phillies’ Bullpen

Jake Diekman was impressive in his Major League Debut as he picked up the win for the Phillies. Diekman could be a key piece for the future of the Phillies' bullpen. It was the same old story for Cliff Lee. Eight innings of one run baseball and this team still couldn’t get him the win. It seems as though this starting rotation is completely snakebitten and unable to get solid...

Philadelphia Phillies storyline: core value

Cliff Lee selected the Philadelphia Phillies for another reason besides the ones he stated. Jonathan Papelbon felt the same way and Doc Halladay desired a trade here. What they notice and understand is normal to them, and they think everybody sees their obvious. Are The Phillies Misusing Jonathan Papelbon?

Jonathan Papelbon has been sharp in his debut season with the Phillies thus far. He has allowed just four runs in his first 15 innings of work (2.40 ERA) and continues to blow away hitters, notching 18 strikeouts already. He was unavailable Monday afternoon, though — after throwing the past three nights consecutively, including with a four-run lead in Sunday’s game (+0.01 WPA...

Report: Cole Hamels Asking for Seven-Year Extension From Phillies

Cole Hamels is widely considered to be the best pitcher hitting the free agent market this offseason. That is, of course, if he doesn't re-sign with the Phillies first. The Philadelphia starter 's agent is reportedly asking the team for a seven-year deal, according to NBC Philadelphia's Howard Eskin. Hamels, 28, is 5-1 with a 2.28 ERA to start the season, and would likely...

From the Minors to The Moon: Extras Help Phillies to a Win

In a 9-2 win over the Cubs Wednesday night, 6 of those 9 runs were produced by pinch hitters. Many of the “extra” pieces the Phillies picked up over the last few weeks contributed to the win. Even the starting pitcher sort of came “off the bench.” With no warning, Kyle Kendrick was thrust into the starting role when Vance Worley unexpectedly went on the DL with elbow soreness...

Phillies' Worley placed on DL

Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Vance Worley was placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 12, with right elbow inflammation. The team isn't sure on the severity of the injury, but Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. told reporters that more should be known. The 24-year-old posted a 3.07 ERA in his first seven starts. He will be replaced by Kyle Kendrick,...

Kendrick continues to show his worth

Kyle Kendrick has certainly had rough spots during his time with the Phillies, but he has also played an important role. In his latest outing, Kendrick came to the rescue when the Phillies needed an emergency starter.

This day in Phillies history, Phillies and Cubs slugfest and pitcher's duel

Today is the anniversary of one of the all-time games in Phillies history, the 23-22 10-inning game in Wrigley Field. The Phillies got off to a fast start by scoring seven runs in the top of the first inning, only to give up six runs in the bottom of the inning. And we were off. Mike Schmidt hit two home runs in the game and starting pitcher Randy Lerch also hit a home run, while...
