I reached out to a good friend in the Giants organization who had this to say about new Yankees backup catcher Chris Stewart: Chris Stewart is not only a fine guy, he does crossword puzzles. He can catch and throw but there is no bat. He will be a nice addition to the Yankee Clubhouse and will never be a trouble maker. He’s a great guy but a backup catcher, at best. Mike Silva adds: I understand the Yankees concerns about catching depth in the organization. They were counting on Austin Romine to be Francisco Cervelli‘s minor leaguer backup, but his back appears to be something that could keep him out a significant portion of the season. The issue I have with this deal is that Cashman traded a decent middle-relief pitching prospect in George Kontos for a backup catcher with a career OPS of .563. Stewart wasn’t good enough to stick around the Yankees his first stint in 2008. Kontos struck out over a batter per inning and posted a 2.62 ERA at Triple-A in 2011. The Yankees are extremely...

Giants’ opening day roster, or; Belt to start at 1B, or; Seriously? Belt to start at 1B?!

The San Francisco Giants made a bunch of decisions today regarding who will and won’t play on their professional baseball team. The roster moves that are especially interesting regard the Giants’ lineup. Summary of lineup-related roster news: Hector Sanchez made the opening day roster over Eli Whiteside and will backup Buster Posey at catcher, which should give Sanchez enough...

Predicting the Opening Day Roster

It’s been a long offseason, but the 2012 regular season is finally about to begin. The Giants will play their opener on the road, against Arizona; as of now, Tim Lincecum is set to start against Ian Kennedy. The Opening Day roster decisions will be announced tomorrow, prior to the team’s exhibition game against Oakland. Here’s my stab at what it’ll look like: Starting Lineup...

Brandon Belt Gets His Opportunity

The San Francisco Giants have finally committed to Brandon Belt. Now the team has to figure out how to best use him. After finishing 29th in runs last season, the Giants were in desperate need of some offense. While Belt’s transition to the majors last year wasn’t all that impressive, his .343/.457/.596 line in the minor leagues proved that he’s more than capable of being...

Rumor: The Giants wanted Phelps for Stewart

The trade for Chris Stewart was confusing and somewhat bothersome because while George Kontos wasn’t a great arm, he seemed like a lot to give up for an all glove, no hit catcher like Stewart. However if the Giants had their way, the Yankees would have given up even more. Apparently the Giants initial asking price was David Phelps, who just won a role in the Yankees bullpen...

Yanks Trade Cervelli to Giants for Chris Stewart

In 183 at-bats with the Giants last season, the 29-year-old (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/stewach01.shtml) hit .204/.283/.309 with 3 HR and 10 RBI. He also threw out 39% of runners trying to steal. Cervelli threw out just 14% in each of the last two years.

Roster reactions & a look at 2012

I have to say that for all the complaints we Giants fans may have from time to time, I cannot say that management is incompetent. Cheap? Sometimes. Gunshy of big free agents? Yes. But inept? Absolutely not. With the group that reported to Scottsdale this spring, I really believe the best 24 came back to The City with the team."But Dodgerhater, isn't it a 25 man roster, not...

Giants not conceding anything to D-backs

Because the Arizona Diamondbacks won the NL West in 2011, the road to the division crown in 2012 technically runs through them. But "technically" is about all the Giants, the D-backs' opponent on Opening Day, will concede. As they await their season opener Friday at Chase Field, the Giants acknowledge the D-backs' place as NL West favorites by default, but they...

Cashman compares Chris Stewart to Jose Molina

Still wondering why the Yankees traded for Chris Stewart and demoted Francisco Cervelli to the minor leagues – it’s because they love Stewart defensively. “Chris Stewart is an exceptional defensive player, right out of the Jose Molina mold,” Brian Cashman told Chad Jennings of the Journal News. “(Francisco) Cervelli is obviously a better hitter than he is.” That...

Projecting the Series: Giants vs Diamondbacks

Opening Day is finally here for the Giants and with it the first installment of my attempts to handicap how the series will play out. Normally for this I have the statistics from the season in progress to go off of when doing this but seeing as the season hasn't started yet, I will use the ZiPS Projections and the Baseball Musings Lineup Analysis tool with lineups...

Giants 3, Athletics 2

Matt Cain's job stability is now in excellent shape for years to come. On Tuesday night, he pitched with a clear mind. Cain struck out six in five innings to cap an unbeaten spring, delivering in a 3-2 victory over the Oakland Athletics a day after the two-time All-Star agreed to a $127.5 million, six-year contract that is the richest in baseball history for a right-hander....

D-backs grab early lead, win vs. Giants

PHOENIX (AP) -- Chris Young and Paul Goldschmidt hit first-inning home runs off Tim Lincecum and the Arizona Diamondbacks opened defense of their NL West title with a 5-4 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Friday. Ryan Roberts' two-run double broke a sixth-inning tie as Arizona defeated Lincecum (0-1) for the fourth time in a row. Ian Kennedy (1-0) allowed three runs...

Cain & Votto Get Monster Contract Extensions: $127 & $220 Million Respectively

Two monster MLB contract extensions have been signed in the last 48 hours with key franchise players remaining put. First was Matt Cain reupping with the Giants on a 6 year $27 million contract & ...

Fear the Airplane!

Fear the beard! Not sure why Virgin Airlines would want you to fear traveling on its airplane, but apparently Giants’ closer Brian Wilson was the inspiration for Virgin to paint one of its planes in honor of Wilson and the Giants.
