Greg Dobbs, Jose Lopez and Javier Vazquez were declared free agents along with 145 other major leaguers on Sunday morning. Teams can sign their own free agents at any time, but players cannot ink deals with new teams any earlier than Thursday at 12:01 a.m. It’s unlikely we’ll see any big signings until after the new collective bargaining agreement is ratified. The current deal expires in December, but according to numerous reports the two sides are within spitting distance of hammering out the new one. The Marlins would probably give serious thought to bringing back Vazquez. He’s given strong indications he planned to retire. Dobbs did a great job for the Marlins filling in at third base. He really didn’t address his free agent status in any detail before season’s end. Not sure if his priority is playing time, joining a contender, getting a two-year deal, etc. He would be a valuable lefty bat on the Marlins’ bench. Chances are Lopez doesn’t ...

Miami Marlins have to be prudent when considering splashy signings

Had a spirited discussion on Twitter Sunday night with @Sofla_sportsfan and @franchocaliche among others about whether the Marlins have to make a big free agent signing heading into the new ballpark. And by big I’m talking about a tier one guy like Pujols, Fielder, Reyes or Sabathia. My feeling is no because any one of those players doesn’t make the Marlins an instant...

Marlins, Red Sox Out Of The Reyes Sweepstakes?

In a post to MLB.com, Joe Frisaro was told by Florida Marlins team president David Samson that the Fish have no intentions of changing Hanley Ramirez position and “there has been no conversations” on the subject. I suppose if we sign a free-agent first baseman who would only sign with us if he could play shortstop, I guess that is the conversation we’d have with...

Florida Marlins OF Logan Morrison touches all the bases in Jonah Keri podcast

Had a chance over the weekend to listen to Jonah Keri’s podcast with Logan Morrison. Keri, who posted it on Thursday, broached just about every relevant subject with Morrison, from his demotion last season to his Twitter habits to the possibility he might get traded this winter. Marlins team president says, “Hanley is our shortstop”

According to Joe Frisaro of MLB.com, Marlins team president David Samson put to rest speculation that the team is weighing whether to move Hanley Ramirez to another position. “There has been no conversations with that,” Samson said, according to Frisaro. “I suppose if we sign a free-agent first baseman who would only sign with us if he could play shortstop, I guess...
