Found February 18, 2013 on Friarhood:
This is the fifth (took a week off…just to stretch it out) in a ten-part series where I will identify the top three players at each position in the Padres’ minor league system. Up next: Third Base. If you want to crack the lineup as a third baseman in San Diego in the near future, you’re going to have to do it at a different position. Case in point? Jedd Gyorko. Granted, that’s until a decision is made on Chase Headley. My gut tells me the team will sign him to a big deal, leaving the 3Bs in the system to start honing their skills in LF (historically, the position of choice for converting hot corner players). James Darnell will be an interesting puzzle piece this season. James Darnell is a player who has fallen into injury obscurity. His name hasn’t come up much since the shoulder injury, sustained while playing in LF, not his natural position. I’ll save that rant for another day. In five minor league seasons, Darnell has an impressive line of: .299/.398/.508. He clubbed 63 homers...

Five Ridiculously Optimistic Projections For the Padres

A few weeks back and in response to comments made by Ron Fowler about a proposed trade that if made would have “knocked the socks off” Padres fans, I wrote a piece listing five potential deals that would certainly live up to Fowler’s words. Of course I was ridiculed on Facebook when the article was linked. Apparently Friarhood bloggers are not meant to have a sense of humor...

Two Padres Linked to Miami Clinic

Everth Cabrera – Photo by: SD Dirk Two Padres in addition to Yasmani Grandal have surfaced in connection with Biogenesis of America clinic ran by Anthony Bosch.  ESPN is reporting that shortstop Everth Cabrera and recently claimed pitcher Fautino De Los Santos have surfaced in connection with the Miami clinic. Sources said the players, like those who have been named in previous...

Padres' Yasmani Grandal won't start hitting until next week

The San Diego Padres will have their young catcher in camp, but they won't have him on the field for the first 50 games of the regular season.  Yasmani Grandal tested positive for a banned substance and was suspended for violating the league's substance abuse policy.  He was later linked to the scandal involving Biogenesis in Miami.  Grandal can take part in spring games...

Daily Friar 2.17.13

The first weekend of spring training is coming to a close. So far it has been pretty eventful for the Padres, and the late news from yesterday is no different. Yasmani Grandal issued his apology yesterday afternoon (shortly after I posted the Daily Friar). Also last night it was announced that Clayton Richard has signed with the club, thus avoiding arbitration. There is significance...

Friarhood Chapter List

Join the Congregation From the beginning, a primary goal of Friarhood was to allow fans from all over keep up with the team.  I know if you live outside of San Diego keeping up with the Padres can be challenging.  In an effort to keep Padres fans involved I have set up Friarhood chapters on facebook.  The purpose of these chapters is to introduce yourself to other Padres fans...

Daily Friar 2.19.13

The first spring training game is coming up very quickly. Friday marks opening day over at the Peoria Sports Complex as the Padres take on the Mariners. In fact that is the team they will be playing all weekend. The starting pitchers have been announced as well for those games with Sean O’Sullivan getting the nod on Friday, Tyson Ross Saturday and Freddy Garcia on Sunday. It will...

San Diego Padres: 3 Up and 3 Down

2012 was not a banner year for the San Diego Padres. The starting rotation was shaky and if it wasn’t for a huge year from Chase Headley at the plate, the offense would have been abysmal. They finished the year 76-86 and in 4th place, ahead of only the lowly Rockies in the NL West. A full year removed from the Mat Latos trade, there is now cause for concern that it might not have...
