Three- no hitters were thrown on this day; two by Hall of Famers Walter Johnson and Bob Feller, and the third by the lesser known Andy Hawkins.  In 1920, Johnson fired a 1-0 gem against the Boston Red Sox losing a perfect game on a Bucky Harris error.  In 1951, Feller got his 3rd career no hitter tying the record of Cy Young and Larry Corcoran as Cleveland beat Detroit 2-1.  Andy Hawkins has no plaque in the Hall, but gets the award for the most interesting no hitter on this date.  Hawkins not only pitched a no hitter in 1990, but took a 4-0 loss as the Yankee’s made 3 errors behind him in the 8th.

Two historic Parks also opened on this date. In 1910, White Sox field opens as the White Sox played to a crowd of 24,000, but lose 2-0 to the St. Louis Browns. The field would go on to be renamed Comiskey Park after team owner, Charlie Comiskey.

In 1920, the St. Louis Cardinals opened Sportsman’s Park with a 6-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Sportsman’s Park would go on to be the backdrop for seven St. Louis Cardinal World Championships and the fantastic career of Stan Musial.

That was July 1st,  this day in baseball.
