James McDonald,
Jordan Zimmermann
TEAMS: Pittsburgh Pirates, Washington Nationals
TEAMS: Pittsburgh Pirates, Washington Nationals
- The Pirates demoted Alex Presley yesterday to get some relief help in Evan Meek (there will be another move coming soon to get another bat here), and that backfired on them last night as Meek loaded the bases on a hit batsman and a walk and then allowed a three run double to Adam LaRoche to help the Nationals beat the Pirates 7-4 last night. A questionable decision to allow Meek to pitch in a close game just hours after his official promotion? Yeah, I'd say so. [Recap]
- With the move made yesterday, it is entirely possible that Kevin Correia makes a phantom trip to the DL this weekend so the Pirates can bring up a Matt Hague, which would mean Brad Lincoln would be the starter on Sunday. Obviously that's just speculation, and you'll have to wait and see what happens. Whatever it is, it'll most likely happen Friday before the game in Detroit, when the Pirates will need a designated hitter.
- Erik Bedard struck out seven but allowed three solo home runs and four runs total and got his fifth loss of the season last night. The good news is that he wasn't bothered by his back at all, which is really all you could have asked for last night. Here are Bedard's pitch f/x from last night.
- I did some Pirates count analysis on RumBunter yesterday, you can read the post here.
- Here's a post about what I think the Pirates should do in terms of the fifth starting pitcher until Jeff Karstens gets back.

- Pirates will try to avoid the mini sweep in DC tonight by sending James McDonald the hill to face Jordan Zimmermann. First pitch is at 7:05.

Pirates Promote Gorkys Hernandez, Demote Evan Meek
I’m just going to come right out and say it. I love the promotion of Gorkys Hernandez. He should be given every opportunity to earn a starting role. I also love Evan Meek being demoted. Only because he just doesn’t have it. This was the correct move. In fact this was the only move. The [...]

What You Need to Know: Friday, May 18 by Daniel Rathman
The Thursday Takeaway
Pirates starter James McDonald took home his third win of the season last night, but by the time he left the mound, he had been saddled with three runs in 5 2/3 innings—an outcome that belied his dominance of the Nationals in his team’s 5-3 win.
The 27-year-old righty cruised through his first five innings, pounding the zone and missing plenty of bats...
Former Buccos bury the Pirates
Remember when we used to make fun of Adam LaRoche for sucking so bad? Remember when he used to hit below .200 for the first half of the season while playing first base for the Pirates? What the hell happened?
Last night, LaRoche went 3 for 4 including a homer, 4 RBIs and his 1,000th Major League hit and led the Nationals to a 7-4 win over the Buccos. Again, what the hell happened...
