DETROIT (AP) -- The Detroit Tigers have agreed to a five-year contract with right-handed pitcher Anibal Sanchez. Sanchez will be at a news conference Monday afternoon. The team didn't disclose financial terms, but a person familiar with it told The Associated Press last week on condition of anonymity that the deal is worth 80 million. Sanchez helped Detroit reach the World Series this year. He had a 1.77 ERA in 20 1-3 innings over three postseason starts, but was 1-2 because the Tigers were shut out in each of his losses. Detroit acquired the 28-year-old Venezuelan in July from Miami along with second baseman Omar Infante for right-hander Jacob Turner and two minor leaguers. He is 48-51 with a 3.75 ERA since making his major league debut with the Marlins in 2006.

The Tigers officially announced the re-signing of starting pitcher Anibal Sanchez to a five-year, $80 million dollar contract with a club option for 2018. “Anibal pitched tremendously for us down the stretch and during the post-season,” Tigers president and GM Dave Dombrowski said. “He strengthens our starting rotation and we are pleased to have him back with the Tigers organization...

Tigers now taking calls on Drew Smyly

With recent rumors and trade discussion surrounding Rick Porcello, it appears as though the Tigers are now also fielding offers for lefty Drew Smyly. Tigers are taking calls on Smyly as well as Porcello. Not committed to trading either one, but with tons of interest, I’m guessing one goes. — DKnobler (@DKnobler) December 18, 2012 With Anibal Sanchez on board the Tigers will...

Tigers Rumors: Detroit Listening on Drew Smyly

Tigers are taking calls on Smyly as well as Porcello. Not committed to trading either one, but with tons of interest, I'm guessing...

Anibal Sanchez wanted to stay in Detroit

DETROIT -- Anibal Sanchezs agent, Gene Mato, said his client left money on the table during the winter meetings from a club he wouldn't specify he only said it wasn't the Chicago Cubs because Sanchez wasnt comfortable with that team. Mato claims Sanchez could have made more than he ended up getting from the Tigers, who announced an 80 million, five-year contract with a...

If the Cubs Had “Force Trade” On, They Might Consider Drew Smyly

Among other reports swimming around the interwebs lately, Brett at Bleacher Nation writes a blurb about the Tigers possibly floating both Rick Porcello and Drew Smyly on the trade market: Danny Knobler says the Cubs and Tigers did speak about Rick Porcello, now that he’s expendable, but the two sides didn’t find a fit. The Tigers are alternatively listeningon lefty Drew Smyly...

The star atop the Verlander’s Christmas tree is not only stunning, it can throw a 100 mph heater

Ben Verlander—current Old Dominion player, Detroit Tigers draft pick, and younger brother of pitching ace Justin—recently tweeted out this picture of the Verlander family Christmas tree, with its very special decorative star sitting atop the tree in all its festive, Verlander-y glory… It’s lovely, but nowhere near as nice as the Ryan Braun menorah proudly displayed at the...

Tigers Rumors: Pirates, Rangers, Angels Fits for Rick Porcello?

With their surplus of pitching after re-signing Anibal Sanchez, the Detroit Tigers are expected to trade one of their extra arms, most likely Rick Porcello. The Pittsburgh Pirates, Texas Rangers and Los Angeles Angels are three possible fits for Porcello, according to Tony Paul of the Detroit News. The Pirates have what Paul considers to be “a dandy trade chip” in...

Rant Sports: The Chicago Cubs Continue To Prove They’re a Joke In Failed Anibal Sanchez Signing

If blogs could be designated for assignment, Rant Sports, along with Bleacher Report, would have been DFA'd a long time ago. They're not even replacement level blogs worthy of the minimal amount of attention, but here we are: paying attention to them because there isn't anything else to write about. So why not make fun [...]

Alderson’s Amazin Plan: A Long And Winding Road

2012 saw Miguel Cabrera become the first Triple Crown winner in 45 years. I wonder if Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski has considered trading Cabrera. Surely after putting up numbers like that he could definitely get some good prospects. We had a pitcher once who seemed to be slipping. He was approaching 33, his best years behind him. Over his last two seasons, his ERA rose 26%, his strikeouts...

Tigers Not Interested in Joel Hanrahan

Danny Knobler has an update on the Detroit Tigers and starting pitcher Rick Porcello. He reports that the Angels are interested in Porcello, along with the Pirates, Rangers, and the Phillies before adding John Lannan. We’ve heard a lot about a possible Joel Hanrahan for Rick Porcello swap, but it doesn’t look like that would happen. Knobler reports the Tigers aren’t interested...
