PLAYERS: Max Scherzer
TEAMS: Detroit Tigers
getty images The Max Scherzer trade rumors are getting hotter, even as the Tigers prepare for Game 5 of their ALDS series against the Athletics. Danny Knobler is the latest to report that the Tigers could trade the right-handed Scherzer during the offseason. Scherzer is the favorite to win the American League Cy Young award but his future with the Tigers is unclear. The 29-year-old Scherzer will command a large contract which could be above what the Tigers can afford. At 21-3 with a 2.90 ERA and a 0.97 WHIP there should be plenty of teams interested in Scherzer. A trade this season could create a larger pool of teams to trade Scherzer too but nothing is certain at this point as the Tigers will try to contend again in 2014.

TURNING POINT? Scherzer works out of 8th inning bases loaded jam to help propel the Tigers to victory (VIDEO)

There are certain plays in a game or series that fans, analysts, players and managers may look back on and determine that right there was the turning point for their team. It could be a single play, a move the manager made or a sequence of events leading up to the culmination. Last night during the Tigers’ do-0r-die Game 4 against the Oakland A’s you may be able to identify a...

Video: Max Scherzer Escapes Bases-Loaded Situation in Eighth Inning

In what may have been one of the most exciting sequences in Comerica Park’s relatively brief history, Max Scherzer managed to wiggle out of a bases-loaded, no-out situation Tuesday, preserving the Tigers’ Game 4 lead. Scherzer walked the leadoff man in the eighth, then allowed a double to Yoenis Cespedes. He then intentionally walked Seth Smith to load the bases. But strikeouts...

Tigers May Use AL Cy Young Award Favorite Max Scherzer Out of Bullpen Facing Elimination vs. Athletics

The Detroit Tigers are facing elimination on Tuesday in Game 4 of the ALDS against the Oakland Athletics, but despite the importance of this matchup, manager Jim Leyland has opted not to pitch Game 1 winner Max Scherzer. Instead, Doug Fister has taken the mound with the Tigers’ season on the line. His last outing against the Athletics at Comerica Park was in August, when he gave...

Scherzer blocks World Series path

One victory to reach the World Series. And all that's in Boston's way is 21-game winner Max Scherzer, with Justin Verlander on deck for a seventh game - if it gets that far. ''We all know what we are up against,'' Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia said on Friday after an offday workout to prepare for Game 6 of the AL championship series against the Detroit...

Tigers may trade Scherzer this winter before cost skyrockets

Baseball's winter trade market will feature a Cy Young winner. Or two Cy Young winners. The Rays will almost certainly trade David Price. But there's also a very real chance that the Tigers trade Max Scherzer according to sources. Scherzer hasn't won a Cy Young yet but he's the heavy favorite to win the award in the American League this year after going 21-3 with...

Tigers rally past A's, force Game 5

Max Scherzer escaped a major jam in relief and the Detroit Tigers -- helped by two fans who reached out to try to reel in Victor Martinez's disputed home run -- rallied past the Oakland Athletics 8-6 on Tuesday to force a decisive fifth game in their AL division series. Playing catch-up most of the way, the Tigers tied it first with Jhonny Peralta's three-run homer in the...

Cabrera's toughness inspired Max Scherzer during Game 4 relief outing

The Tigers are playing in the ALCS for the third straight season but that doesn't mean getting here was easy. They had to win two elimination games in the ALDS against the Athletics earlier this week including Game 4 after being down three runs early. Detroit was on the brink of going home. In that Game 4 manager Jim Leyland used Game 1 starter Max Scherzer out of the bullpen...

And the ALCS winner will be ...

It's easy to envision the Detroit Tigers winning the American League Championship Series. Heck, if right-handers Anibal Sanchez, Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander pitch to their abilities, the series might not even be close. Much has been made of the Boston Red Sox's transformation in character, and the Sox are indeed a tough-minded group. But the Tigers possess similar...

Detroit Tigers Rally to Force Game 5 Against Athletics with 8-6 Win

After jumping out to an early 1-0 series lead on Friday behind a strong effort by Max Scherzer, the Detroit Tigers would falter heading into the weekend, dropping both Games 2 and 3 to the Oakland Athletics.
