There’s nothing quite like a strikeout highlight reel.  The umpire continuously rings up batters or hitters keep swinging and missing.  The pitches look nasty, making the batter look like he never stood a chance.  All the pitcher’s opposition can do is walk back to the dugout with his head down.  Collectively punching out 1,299 batters in 2011, the Phillies pitching staff was featured in many of these highlight reels.  Cliff Lee created a highlight reel of his own during his third start in 2011.

On April 14, Phillies Nation took a bus trip to Washington D.C to invade Nationals Park.  With Cliff Lee on the mound, Phillies fans expected a great game from Lee, and that is exactly what they got.

Carlos Ruiz provided the offense with a solo home run, and that would be all the Phillies needed as Lee mowed down the Nationals.  The Phillies added some insurance runs, but they didn’t even need it.

The Nationals’ hitters kept having to go back to the dugout as Lee dominated batter after batter, striking out twelve.  Lee needed just 99 pitches for the complete game shutout.  During his dominant performance, Lee only surrendered three hits and one walk.

Lee found himself on many highlight reels in 2011, and he was truly masterful in his outing against the Nationals in the beginning of April.
