Found April 29, 2013 on Pirates Prospects:
Below are the top Runs Created* totals in the Pittsburgh Pirates’ farm system from the last week. The rankings include every hitter who had an at-bat for a Pirates’ minor league affiliate, not including DSL teams, and with no limitations on whether the hitter has prospect eligibility. Players who spent time at different levels are counted multiple times, once for each level, rather than combining their stats. Notes on the top ten players from the last week can be found below the chart. *Runs Created is a stat created by Bill James used to estimate how many runs an individual contributes to his team. There are many formulas for runs created. For these purposes the basic formula is used. That formula is ((H + BB) * (1B + (2*2B) + (3*3B) + (4*HR))) / (AB + BB). Jose Osuna has a .417/.476/.528 line over his last ten games. Jose Osuna started the 2013 season slow for the Bradenton Marauders. He wasn’t making much hard contact, and wasn’t hitting for average. In the last few weeks he’s ...

Prospect Watch: Kingham Strikes Out 13, Morton Goes Six in Rehab Start

TOP OF THE SYSTEM A look at how the current top 20 prospects did today.  Note that this list doesn’t include players currently in the majors. If a player is in the majors, he will be removed, everyone below him will be shifted up a spot, and a new player will be added to the bottom of the list. Rankings are from the pre-season rankings, and links to each prospect writeup can be...

Photo credit: David Hague Russell Martin has been named the National League player of the Week, Major League Baseball announced this afternoon. Prospect Notebook: Pirates Have a Lot of Pitching Depth in Indianapolis

The Indianapolis Indians are off to a 19-7 start this year, which is their best start in 54 years. The last time they started off this well was in 1959, when they went 22-7 to start the year. Minor league wins and losses don’t mean much. The main focus is developing players for the majors. In the Triple-A level, the focus is also on providing depth for the majors. Wins can be nice...

Is Jeff Locke Starting to Figure Things Out?

Jeff Locke has thrown 13 shutout innings in his last two starts. Don’t look now, but Jeff Locke has a 2.83 ERA in 28.2 innings so far this year in the majors. That number is probably too low for his actual skills. He has a 4.60 xFIP, which suggests his overall performances have been nowhere near the actual result. But Locke is starting to show some improvements. We saw some of...

Phil Irwin Returns to Indianapolis, Ready to Start

Phil Irwin is active and ready to start. Phil Irwin has been out of action since his spot start with the Pittsburgh Pirates on April 14th. The right-hander has been dealing with a period of dead arm, and the Pirates decided to be cautious and rest him. He was stashed on the Altoona roster for a period of time, allowing Indianapolis to carry a full roster of pitchers. Today Irwin...

Draft Prospect Watch: Could Pirates Be Interested In Ian Clarkin Or Ryan Boldt?

The 11th weekend of college baseball finished up today, as we focus on the college bats, a couple HS players and some former Pirates draft picks who will go high this year. Check out the draft preview posted here and the recap of the tenth week’s action here. Just a reminder, the Pirates pick #9 and #14 in this year’s June amateur draft, so for the duration of the college season...

Game 26 Preview: Pirates at Brewers

Pirates (15-10) at Brewers (12-11) 8:10 PM–Miller Park, Milwaukee MLB.com Gameday TV: ROOT The Bucs are off to the House of Horrors this week as they look to finish strong in what has been an excellent road trip so far. It won’t be easy – it never is for the Pirates in Milwaukee. They did win a series there last year when everything was going well in June, so it CAN happen...

Pirates designate Jonathan Sanchez for assignment

The Pittsburgh Pirates have designated Jonathan Sanchez for assignment. On Monday he allowed two runs in 2 1/3 innings of relief. During Sanchez’s five appearances for the Pirates this year he compiled a 11.85 ERA and a 15/8 K/BB ratio. Sanchez was recently suspended for six games after throwing at Cardinals first basemen Allen Craig. There is little reason to believe that Sanchez...

Pittsburgh Pirates Designate Pitcher Jonathan Sanchez

The Pittsburgh Pirates have designated pitcher Jonathan Sanchez for assignment. Struggling mightily all season, his final straw was throwing at St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Allen Craig. His suitors will be thin and it just goes to show that if you are struggling, you shouldn’t give the source of your good income a great reason to get rid of you. The post Pittsburgh Pirates...

Pirates 9, Cardinals 0

Rookie Jeff Locke pitched seven innings of three-hit ball and Russell Martin had two of Pittsburgh's four home runs in a 9-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday that gave the Pirates a series win and the NL Central lead. Jones had three hits and John McDonald added an RBI double for Pittsburgh, which ended rookie Shelby Miller's streak of 14 scoreless innings...

Brewers 12, Pirates 8

There are two primary types of Pirates losses in Milwaukee. The first was the one you saw on Monday, when the Bucs just get blown out. Tuesday was different, but just as painful. The Bucs took advantage of whatever makes Miller Park so great to hit in and crushed several homers of their own, but as usual they were outgunned and lost in a long, back-and-forth battle. James McDonald...

Minor League Schedule: 5/1/13

Bradenton’s game last night was suspended in the seventh inning with the score tied 4-4 and Brevard County batting. The game will resume today, prior to the start of the regularly scheduled game. West Virginia was off yesterday. Indianapolis has off today. For a look at the possible starters over the next few weeks, please check out our Probable Pitchers Chart. We have added a...

Game 26: Brewers 10 Pirates 4

I want to say that nothing went right in this game, but that's not true in the strictest sense. The Pirates took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning and then nothing went right from there. Wandy Rodriguez couldn't find the strike zone in the first inning and when he had a chance to get out of the inning with the Pirates still only down 2-1, Clint Barmes booted a double...
