Andres Torres straining left calf is not making progress and there is still no time frame on his return. With just a little over a week before opening day the Mets have to come up with an alternative plan.
Even if Hairston was seen as an everyday center fielder, which I don't believe is the case they have to take it easy on him as he returns from his second oblique injury in less than a year.
While Baxter, Loewen, Rottino and Hairston all can fill-in at center for a game or two but none of the group should be relied upon for two weeks straight.
The Mets seem to realize this as they have talked about carrying a true center fielder and while Kirk Nieuwenhuis is hurt, they have recalled Matt Den Dekker.
"It's a pretty big piece of the puzzle," Terry Collins said. "We got him to fill a pretty big void for us. With him being out out of the gate and with Scott hurt, we're going to scramble." source Newsday
BEST OF MAXIM
Mets left-hander Garrett Olson was struck by a batted ball on his pitching hand during a Minor League game on Sunday. He suffered a contusion on the palm of his hand and was taken to a local hospital for precautionary X-rays, which were negative.
Olson was a strong contender to make the Mets as a reliever, and it’s not yet clear if this will pose any setback.
He has allowed...
There are a ton of people who write about the Mets and I am happy to say that most of them seem to be good people, too. I guess it is not a huge surprise that the guys at the biggest sites – Cerrone and Baron at MetsBlog and Simon, Kannengeiser, Artus and crew over at Amazin’ Avenue – are top notch. But it seems that no matter what size Mets blog you run across, you will...
According to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, the Mets have re-signed free-agent RHP Chris Young to a minor league contract.
Young won’t be ready to pitch until July at the earliest.

Adam Rubin is reporting that right-hander pitcher Chris Young is close to re-signing with the Mets on a minor league deal.
Young made four solid starts for the Mets last season...
Johan Santana takes the mound today in a 1:05 PM start against the St. Louis Cardinals. Manager Terry Collins said Santana is expected to throw 90-95 pitches in the game.
In his last start, also against the Cardinals, Santana threw 69 pitches, 48 of them for strikes in what was his best pitched game of the spring. His impressive performance prompted Collins to say this:
The New York Mets will honor the memory of Gary Carter on Opening Day, Thursday, April 5 at Citi Field with his family participating in a special pre-game ceremony prior to the season’s opener against the Atlanta Braves at 1:10 p.m. Carter passed away February 16 after a courageous 10-month battle with brain cancer.
Gary’s wife, Sandy, son, D.J., and daughters, Kimmy and Christy...
Photo by Michael BaronAndy McCullough of the Star Ledger is reporting that the Mets should finalize a minor league deal with Chris Young by the end of the week. Young was excellent in his four starts for the Mets last year but it seems like an awful fast return from the same surgery Johan Santana had and took twice as long to return. It doesn't really impact them to bring...
The Mets brought RHP Chris Young back today on a minor league deal. Although Young had the same surgery last season that has sidelined Johan Santana for nearly two years, some reports optimistically have him back on the mound by late May. Again, we know all the depth issues the team has, which makes me wonder if they would also consider Andy Sonnanstine.
Sonnanstine is now...
David Wright lines a single up the middle in his first at-bat!!!
— New York Mets (@Mets) March 26, 2012
While speaking with reporters following the Mets loss against the Braves this afternoon, Terry Collins said that prospect Matt Den Dekker is a “legitimate consideration” for making the opening day roster.
Den Dekker is just 3-for-19 (.158) so far in spring, although two of his hits (double, triple) have gone for extra bases. He does have three walks already, however, he also...
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) -- Ike Davis and Lucas Duda each hit home runs as the New York Mets' tied the St. Louis Cardinals 6-6 in 10 innings Saturday.
It was the first homer for Davis, who was diagnosed earlier in spring training with what is likely valley fever, which can cause extreme fatigue. Davis hit a three-run shot off Lance Lynn in the first.
Cardinals center fielder...
JUPITER, Fla. (AP) -- David Wright singled and made a fine fielding play in his first spring training game, helping the New York Mets beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-3 Monday.
Wright had missed the entire Grapefruit League schedule because of a torn abdominal muscle. He lined Jake Westbrook's full-count pitch into left field in the first inning. He grounded out to short in the...
Photo by Michael BaronIt seemed likely that Miguel Batista was making the team since they seemed to like his veteran leadership in the pen, along with providing decent innings since joining the organization. Now with D.J. Carrasco more then likely be starting the season on the DL, Batista seems to be a lock for the roster. Batista making the team will cost someone their 40 man roster...
