According to two Pirates sources, the Yankees came close to dealing [Francisco Cervelli] for [Brad Lincoln], a 26-year-old right-hander with a dozen big-league games who is currently in the minors.
That swap would have cleared a spot for [Jesus Montero].
“It was very close, but couldn’t agree on the value of the players,” a source said.
Hopefully this deal didn’t fall apart because the Yankees value Cervelli in any shape or form, but unfortunately that’s probably the case. Cervelli doesn’t add much value to the Yankees. The poor defensive catcher doesn’t reach base at a good clip (.294 OBP) and he doesn’t have any power to speak of (.295 SLG). He is actually a -0.1 WAR. So he technically adds a negative value to the Yankees.
The thing is, this trade would only be addition by subtraction as Lincoln isn’t worth a whole lot. He’s a former 1st round draft pick that has been unimpressi...
