Trading Cole Hamels for the Phillies may come down to deciding whether to part ways on his terms or theirs.

It’s not a popular opinion, but it is the bottom line. The Philadelphia Phillies trading Cole Hamels may be a necessary evil. I’ve said all along that there is value in a 28 year old left hander with his best days ahead of him. I just didn’t think that value would be realized elsewhere at the time.

For my money, I’d give Hamels what he wants. If he wants 7 years, you give it to him. Move salary elsewhere. Cliff Lee comes to mind at the moment.

As the situation with Hamels drags out, you really begin to get the sense that this isn’t going to end with the Phillies re-signing him. The closer he gets to free agency, the less sense it makes for him to sign anyway. Why not try the open market and get a team to overpay? And really, what is Hamels’ motivation to stay in Philly now anyway? This ship is sinking. Even if he did stay, it may be a little bit before this team is able to contend again.

It all comes down to whether you want the Phillies to lose Cole Hamels on Cole Hamels’ terms, for which they may get nothing for him, or whether you want them to lose him in their terms.

Reports came out yesterday that Hamels is being shopped and the Phillies are trying to gauge interest and determine a market for him. A report also said that before any trade was made that the Phillies would try one last time to sign him. That doesn’t mean that they will pull the trigger on a deal. It just means they’re trying to figure out what’s out there if they do.

The Phillies are said to be asking for 3-4 top level prospects for Hamels. That would be a good haul. The question is whether a team out there will be willing to rent a player for that kind of package. If the Phillies can pull off a trade like that and get that kind of value for Hamels, than I am all for it. It’s clear this team is declining. With a couple of solid moves, though, it doesn’t have to mean this team becomes horrible.

Cole Hamels may be the key to that theory becoming reality.
