Trevor Plouffe hasn't hit a home run in two games. That, in and of itself, is worth mentioning, which goes to show the kind of power binge the Minnesota Twins third baseman has been on lately. The first-round draft pick in 2004 is finally starting to validate the faith the Twins placed in him after an incredibly rocky start to his career, and this season. Plouffe was hitting .133 with one home run and three RBIs on May 14. Since that day, Plouffe is hitting .315 with 13 homers and 21 RBIs to cement himself as the everyday third baseman. His 13 homers in 22 games were more than any other player in the majors since May 16. Plouffe suddenly leads the team in home runs with 14.

Twins' Plouffe has turned into a top hitter

Trevor Plouffe got something Sunday only baseball's best hitters get: protection. That would have been unthinkable at any other point in his major-league career, but the reality is Plouffe has been one of baseball's best hitters in June, and Minnesota Twins manager Ron Gardenhire treated him as such for Sunday's series finale against Milwaukee. Through Saturday, Plouffe...

Twins Notes: DeVries, Mauer, etc

- After thankfully designating Jason Marquis for assignment, the Twins decided to promote formerly undrafted Cole DeVries from AAA. DeVries attended the University of Minnesota and Eden Prairie High School before that, so he's a local kid. As Aaron Gleeman noted, DeVries is unlikely to have any kind of sustained success in the big leagues, but [...]

Revere's diving catch brings fans to their feet

MINNEAPOLIS Ben Revere's bat has come alive lately, but the Minnesota Twins outfielder added yet another memorable catch to his ever-growing highlight reel. Revere's catch in the 11th inning of Sunday's 5-4 Twins victory over Milwaukee robbed the Brewers' Norichika Aoki of an extra-base hit. Revere lunged and extended his glove to make the catch as the ball sliced...

Foes appear to be figuring out Twins' Diamond

Scott Diamond is still arguably the most consistent pitcher in the Minnesota Twins' rotation this season, but it appears as if opposing teams are starting to figure the left-hander out.Tuesday's outing matched Diamond's shortest start of the year, just 5 13 innings, and he was hit with the loss his second in a row as the Twins fell 7-2 to the surprising Pittsburgh Pirates...

Shoulder will keep Capps out through Tuesday

MINNEAPOLIS Minnesota Twins closer Matt Capps is dealing with a sore right shoulder and won't pitch until at least Tuesday, manager Ron Gardenhire said before Sunday's series finale against Milwaukee. Capps last pitched in Friday's 5-3 loss to the Brewers. He entered the ninth inning with a 3-3 tie and was hit with a loss when he gave up a two-run homer to Martin Maldonado...

Mauer day-to-day with bruised quad

MINNEAPOLIS Twins catcher Joe Mauer left Sunday's game with a bruised right quad and is listed as day-to-day, the team announced. Mauer suffered the injury during a collision at home plate with Brewers second baseman Rickie Weeks in the second inning. Mauer tagged Weeks for the out but was slow to get up. He stayed in the game but was lifted for a pinch runner in the seventh...

Minnesota rotation remains a mess, but bullpen is improving

One of Minnesota Twins general managerTerry Ryan's major projects this spring was the bullpen, which checked in dead last in the majors last season, 30th of 30 teams in ERA (4.51) and 29th in walks-plus-hits-per-inning-pitched ratio (1.46). It was a major reason the team did a swan dive in the AL Central, going from first to last while losing 99 games. Though much has gone...

Twins' bullpen shined in extra innings battle

MINNEAPOLIS When Twins starter Nick Blackburn left Sunday's game against Milwaukee after six innings, it appeared as if Minnesota's bullpen had just three innings of work ahead. But baseball's an unpredictable game. Sunday's series finale between the Twins and Brewers lasted 15 innings, meaning Minnesota's bullpen pitched nine innings to help the Twins earn...

Fantasy Baseball Daily Fix, June 16th, 2012: Who is Trevor Plouffe?

Trevor Plouffe (credits below) Trevor Plouffe demands your attention. It’s becoming comical at this point. With his 2-4, 2 home runs line, the Minnesota Twins’ slugger adds to his June totals. His monthly line so far: .396, 9 HRs, 16 RBIs, and a 1.462 OPS. Those are unreal numbers. With 7 (count them) HRs in his last 7 games, it’s going to be a disappointment when he doesn’t...

Twins set to hold annual open tryout

MINNEAPOLIS Mark Hamburger didn't have high expectations when he attended the Minnesota Twins' annual open tryout at the Metrodome in 2007. The Mounds View High School graduate was pitching at Mesabi Range Community College in northern Minnesota and playing for a summer ball team, though he didn't exactly see baseball in his long-term plans. But he attended the tryout...

Twins place closer Capps on DL

The Minnesota Twins have placed closer Matt Capps on the disabled list with inflammation in his right shoulder. The team announced the move on Monday, one day after Capps showed up in Cincinnati with more pain in his shoulder. The issue has bothered Capps for much of the summer. The veteran tried to pitch through the discomfort, but it was hampering his effectiveness. The Twins...

MLB Insiders: Minnesota Twins

The Pirates open a three-game series with the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday night at PNC Park. Right-hander Kevin Correia will be on the hill for the Bucs. The Twins will toss lefty Scott Diamond.

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Minnesota Twins – Game 66

Last night was the third night in a row without the Pirates.  As I lay in bed I was shocked at how bad I missed seeing the team.  I don’t know if it’s the small amount of success or what, but I am basically wrapped around this team’s finger, and I love it. Don’t forget [...]
