Some news, notes, and thoughts from my Indians notebook… A change at shortstop looms Just about everyone knows that Indians top prospectFrancisco Lindor is the future at shortstop for the Cleveland Indians, and also that incumbent shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera will all but likely be gone by the end of the 2014 season. The question is, though, if a change at shortstop happens sooner than later. Cabrera, 27, is under contract for next season at $10 million and will be a free agent at the end of the season. He already extended his contract once, but another extension is not expected and he is all but likely to enter the open market after next season looking to cash in as an above average player at his position entering his prime at 29 years old. There is a lot of value there for teams considering his age when he hits the market, so if he continues to perform as he has over the last four or so seasons, he should cash in big in free agency. At this point the Indians can ill afford to keep C...

WFNY Stats & Info: Nick Swisher’s slugging struggles

To many, Nick Swisher’s big signing in the offseason was doomed to be a disappointment. Never much of a star – only one career All-Star game – he reached a four-year, $56 million deal with Cleveland just after turning 32 years old. The pomp and circumstance were exciting, but would he produce? As an understatement, the new Indians slugger has underachieved in the minds of many...

Justin Masterson went up against the Rangers Yu Darvish. We knew it was going to be a pitching contest in Cleveland last night but we didn’t know there would only be one run scored in the game. Second Thoughts Game #102: Rangers 8, Indians 11

A Bench of Riches Since day one of the season, the Indians have been blessed with a luxury they have not enjoyed for quite some time. The bench assembled in the offseason by the Tribe front office is arguably the most improved element of the team and one of the top groups of utility players in the league, if not all of baseball. Players possessing the ability to play multiple positions...

Indians ace Justin Masterson out-duels Rangers' Yu Darvish, 1-0

Catcher Carlos Santana said Justin Masterson's slider was perfect. Justin Masterson begged to differ. "He's too kind" said Masterson. "Carlos likes to use the word perfect a little too often." After Masterson out-dueled Yu Darvish on Saturday night in the Indians' 1-0 victory over Texas at Progressive Field Masterson was the only one objecting to...
