Some news, notes, and thoughts from my Indians notebook… Taking the plunge on Masterson It is something that has not been talked about much yet, but right-hander Justin Masterson is getting closer and closer to free agency with every start he makes. At the same time, with every good start he makes, his price tag goes up and up as well. Masterson, who just turned 28-years old last month, is set to hit free agency after next season. If he continues to pitch like he has to date, he is on his way to a big pay day considering he will be just 29-years old when he enters free agency and will still be in his prime. Even if he morphs back into the starter he has been on average from 2010-2012, he is in for a big enough pay day. The Indians spent a lot of money in the offseason and doled out some significant contracts to the likes of Michael Bourn (four years, $48 million) and Nick Swisher (4 years, $56 million), but Masterson is heading for a huge pay day that will dwarf those contracts. The 2013 Transaction Rundown: April 20-28

The transaction nuttiness continues as the Big Club's inability to stay healthy continues to result in a domino effect of upheaval throughout the organization, especially at Class AA Akron and above. The week saw Lou Marson get off the 15-day DL and promptly reenter the list only four days later.  The beginning of the week saw Cord Phelps demoted to AAA Columbus, where he isn...

Around the Farm takes a quick look at some of yesterday’s performances by Indians prospects throughout the system. The positions listed below are where the player was playing in yesterday’s game. Around the Farm: April 28, 2013

Around the Farm takes a quick look at some of yesterday’s performances by Indians prospects throughout the system. The positions listed below are where the player was playing in yesterday’s game. Jordan Smith: RF, 2-for-4, 2 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI: It’s no secret that Smith is one of my favorite players in the organization. I know that there are some that say he won’t ever develop...

Cleveland Indians Recall Pitcher Scott Barnes

The Cleveland Indians have recalled left handed pitcher Scott Barnes from Triple-A Columbus to help fill the bullpen with a fresh arm for today’s double-header. He isn’t expected to stick around after the set of games. At least he gets a nice bonus on his paycheck and perhaps just enough to treat his boys to a few brews at the bar. The post Cleveland Indians Recall Pitcher...

Cleveland Indians Place Catcher Lou Marson On Disabled List

The Cleveland Indians have placed catcher Lou Marson on the 15-day disabled list due to inflamation of his right shoulder. He was already placed on the disabled list a few weeks back with a strained neck. For the time being, the Indians have called up Yan Gomes to replace Marson on the active roster. There is no time table set for Marson’s return. The post Cleveland Indians Place...

Second Thoughts Game #20: Rain out edition

Will the Indians ever play baseball again? It certainly feels like the Tribe has been in Mother Nature’s doghouse wherever they go this season as they now have four postponements and four games to make up. Fortunately, the team will still be able to get in all four games this weekend as they’ll make up Friday’s series opener on Sunday in a day-night doubleheader. The Royals...

Around the Farm: April 27, 2013

LeVon Washington (CF, Lake County Captains): 5-for-5, 3 R, 1 2B, 2 RBI. This was only Washington’s fourth game of the 2013 season as he missed 18 games after pulling his hamstring in the Captains’ home opener on April 4. Judging by this contest, it appears as if Washington is fully healthy and also hopefully ready to make up for lost time. Washington was essentially the Captains’...

FREDERICK- A back-and forth-battle got away from the Carolina Mudcats, who lost to the Frederick Keys 5-4 Saturday.  Mudcats closer Jeff Johnson surrendered a one-out walk and a two-out double in the bottom of the ninth inning. With runners on second and third, Johnson gave up a two-out two RBI walk-off single. 4/28 Game 1 Recap: Indians 0 - Royals 9

Roster Update: With a double header scheduled today, the Indians and Royals were allowed to add a 26th man to the roster. The Indians chose to add left handed reliever Scott Barnes, which should be very useful after they used the entire bullpen in last night's loss. The Indians made another move as well, placing Lou Marson back on the 15 day DL and bringing back Yan Gomes after...

Second Thoughts Game #20: Royals 3, Indians 2

Player of the Game: Ervin Santana (7 Inn. 6 hits 0 ER 0 BB / 5 SO) The Leadoff They say pitching is the key to winning in baseball. But there also is another key saying that should go along with that: you can’t win if you can’t score. This was exactly the case again for the Cleveland Indians on Saturday night as they fell to the first place Kansas City Royals, 3-2. Tribe starter...

4/28 Game 2 Recap: Indians 10 - Royals 3

Player of the Game Mike Aviles set a new career high with 5 RBI and generally lead the offense in their best game since scoring 19 against Houston more than a week ago (4/20). The RBI came mostly from a three run home run, but also during a fielder's choice in the first and a sacrifice fly in the seventh. The award is Aviles' third of the season, each at a different position...

The win is Carolina’s fourth in five games, and improves their record to 10-11.
