MLB.com Having lost their previous eight games against the Oakland Athletics heading into to this past week’s four-game series that began Monday, the red-hot Cleveland Indians knew that things would be different this time around. With a 9-2 win over the A’s on Thursday night to close out the series and secure the sweep, the Indians once again showed the rest of the A.L. Central that they are a team that cannot be overlooked, regardless of how young this season may be. Winners of four straight and nine of their last ten games overall, Scott Kazmir (2-1) , guided the tribe on Thursday night, earning his second win in as many starts, the first time he has done so since 2010, Kazmir gave up just one run through six innings, while striking out 10 and surrendering five hits on the night. Taking the loss for the A’s was veteran right-hander Bartolo Colon (3-2), who gave up six runs on eight hits over five innings of work. Powering the offence by way of the long ball, Jason Kipnis (4), Nick Swisher (5), and Mark Reynolds, who hit his American League-Leading 11th home run, gave the tribe all they needed in the blowout win. Cleveland Indian’s Manager Terry Francona was understandably pleased after the win. ”We have a very good bullpen. We’re playing well defensively. A lot of guys are contributing offensively. That’s a good way to play baseball.” Next up for the Indians (18-14), who are leading the American League in home runs, is a weekend series with the first-place Tigers (19-13) that begins Friday in Detroit. While the third-place Indians have now lost just four times since April 20, they still trail the up and coming Kansas City Royals by a half-game for second, and are a full game back of the Tigers in the congested A.L. Cetral. Cleveland also recieved some additional good news on Thursday when the team activated outfielder Michael Bourn from the disabled list after missing just shy of a month with a cut finger. Starting Friday’s series opener in the Motor City for the Indians will be Corey Kluber (2-1), 3.06 ERA, who will face the Tiger’s Max Scherzer (4-0), 3.43 ERA. The second game between the two Central division foes will feature Cleveland’s Ubaldo Jimenez (2-2), 6.37 ERA, who will oppose one of the league’s best in the Tiger’s Justin Verlander (4-2), 1.55 ERA. The series finale on Sunday has Cleveland’s Zach McAllister (3-3), 2.63 ERA, facing off against the Tiger’s Rick Porcello (1-2), 7.52 ERA. After this weekend’s divisional series in Deroit concludes on Sunday, things won’t get any easier for the Indians as they will start the week off at home on Monday in a double-header with the always dangerous New York Yankees. Trend Spotting: Mark Reynolds, improved pitching and defense

In the second week of May one thing is clear, Mark Reynolds was one of the five best acquisitions in baseball this past offseason. Just based on WAR value to date, Reynolds’ 1.3 wins would be worth $6.3 million dollars. Meaning that if Reynolds offered negligible value from here to the end of the season the Indians still got value exceeding their one year $6 million contract...

Cleveland Indians’ Mark Reynolds Gets Sweet Revenge

On Monday, Oakland A’s (RHP) Jarrod Parker drilled Cleveland Indians (INF/DH) Mark Reynolds on the side of his head. Mark Reynolds was okay and he went to first base. Reynolds got his revenge when he hit a homer off of Parker. He stood there for a second and then rounded the bases. Reynolds said that was the “sweetest thing” he has every done in baseball and “That’s kind...

Nick Swisher celebration antics not appreciated by one Oakland Athletics pitcher

Cleveland Indians Nick Swisher is one of those guys you either love, or hate.  Love his genuine enjoyment of the game. Hate the way he celebrates in your face when he does well.  The latter is the way Oakland Athletics pitcher A.J. Griffin feels, according to Susan Slusser, San Francisco Chronicle’s Oakland A’s beat writer for 15 seasons and president of the Baseball Writers’...

Cleveland Indians talk – trying not to talk attendance, Swisher’s intangibles, Francona and Ubaldo and more with TD – WFNY Podcast – 2013-05-09

We did talk briefly about the attendance, but really not much at all. We’ve both agreed that it shouldn’t dominate the headlines a second year in a row. Lackluster attendance and how tired we are of talking about it Bud Shaw’s article about the long-term project TV ratings and how far they’re up year over year You can’t get the pulse of casual fans that stopped...

While We’re Waiting… Where nobody has more fun than Nick Swisher

While We’re Waiting serves as the early morning gathering of WFNY-esque information for your viewing pleasure. Have something you think we should see? Send it to our tips email at tips@waitingfornextyear.com. A must read on Francona- “Of all the people to remind Terry Francona how much he missed managing, it was Eric Hinske. Indians 9 Athletics 2: Kazmir Sweeps Out Oakland

The Indians just keep the train rollin’. They do it with power. They do it with some speed. They do it with solid defense. They do it with a lock down bullpen. They do it with quality starting pitching. Wait….what did I just say? Yes, that’s right, they do it with solid starting pitching. A night after Justin Masterson was sharp for six of his seven innings of work and the...

Terry Francona Gets A Sunflower Seed Shower During Interview

Mike Aviles of the Cleveland Indians had a little fun with his manager, Terry Francona, during a day game against the A’s on Thursday.  While Francona was being interviewed during the third inning Aviles tossed some sunflower seeds at the oblivious Francona and thankfully it was captured on camera. Scott Kazmir K's 10, dominates Athletics

When Scott Kazmir made his first start of the season against the Houston Astros it wasn't pretty. Staked to a huge lead, he coughed up six runs in just over three innings, walked three and struck out four. Not exactly what you'd expect after posting some great numbers in spring training. Since that start, the Scott Kazmir everyone has been waiting for has finally shown...

O's took a chance and gamble with Machado has paid off

In August of 2012, the Baltimore Orioles were in the wild card hunt and desperate to solve a problem – third base. As we all know from last season, former Oriole Mark Reynolds despite his power was struggling at the hot corner, and executive vice president Dan Duquette, the front office, along with manager Buck Showalter were looking for a solution. In the middle of that...

Indians 4 A’s 3: Its Better To Be Lucky Than Good

When this series with Oakland began, I wrote that umpire Angel Hernandez was arguably the second worst umpire in the game behind C.C. Bucknor. Tonight, the crew chief was at second base. Three nights ago he did the Tribe a favor when he didn’t toss Oakland starter Jarrod Parker for throwing at the head of Mark Reynolds after giving up two homers earlier in the inning. If he had...
