Manager Kirk Gibson is looking at the Diamondbacks' interleague road trip to Texas and Anaheim this week as a "great opportunity" for his team to continue its hot streak. The D-backs have won five in a row and seven of their last eight to return to .500 for the first time in five weeks.

The visiting manager's office at the Ballpark in Arlington also will have a nostalgic feel for Gibson.

It is where Gibson told Detroit manager Sparky Anderson that he was going to retire after a game on Aug. 10, 1995. The decision was based on a combination of factors. The Tigers had traded their best pitcher and one of Gibson's best friends, David Wells, to Cincinnati at the July 31 non-waiver deadline, and earlier on Aug. 10 had dealt closer Mike Henneman to Houston for young catcher/outfielder Phil Nevin. And Gibson was batting a sports hernia that made it difficult to walk, let alone run.

"Walked in, talked to Sparky, said, 'That's it.' Sparky understood what was going on," said Gibson, who two days before had a two-hit game.

Gibson flew with the team to Milwaukee that Thursday night, then caught a plane for Detroit the following morning. He told only one teammate, close friend Alan Trammell, on the bus ride to the airport. The Tigers were four games back in the wild-card race when Wells was traded.

"David was a really good friend of mine. It seemed to me like we were cashing it in, and here I was, I could barely get out of bed every day. It was hard to get up and hard to walk, really hard to run," said Gibson, noting that players never wanted to be seen in the training room in those days.

"I'd get ready for the game, go through it every single day. I was just saying, 'Why am I doing this?' This is more than painful, and what we are doing it for? I wasn't going to stand there and take an opportunity from some young kid if that was the direction we were going.

"That was fine. I went home."
