The Mets plan to give infielders Justin Turner and Zach Lutz an opportunity at playing time in the outfield during spring training, manager Terry Collins told ESPNNewYork.com Thursday. That plan could change should the team supplement its current options with an addition via trade or free agency. Lutz hasn't played in the outfield at any level since becoming a professional, while Turner hasn't spent time in the outfield since rookie ball in 2006. Turner, 28, hit .269/.319/.392 with two home runs in 185 plate appearances for the Mets in 2012. He made at least 10 appearances at first base, second base, shortstop and third base for the team last season. Lutz, 26, had just 11 plate appearances with the Mets in his first major-league action last season, but hit .299/.410/.496 with 10 home runs in 294 Triple-A plate appearances in 2012.

Mets Minors: Ratings by the numbers Zack Wheeler and the Top 5 prospects

Using a heavy dose of spreadsheets and formulas I’m going to be reviewing the top prospects for the Mets.  You do need to understand that I am not going to be placing a players peak on the moon, but rather using their draft position and age to show the window of how successful they might be at the next level.  So a player in Savannah is unlikely to have a peak in the 90s with...

Mets360 2013 projections: Jonathon Niese

Welcome to the second edition of the Mets360 projection series. After discussing Ike Davis last time out, this time we turn our attention to Jonathon Niese. Last time, I mentioned how none of us have a detailed projection system and that instead this is just how we feel the player is going to turn out. For the most part that’s still true but there is one slight modification...

How Good Were The 1986 Mets Compared To Other Great Teams?

I just finished reading Mark Simon’s latest post on ESPN New York entitled, Top 5: Best Mets Teams. It’s a fascinating series he’s been working on this month, and I’ve enjoyed each of his segments, particularly this one. You should check it out. We all know how powerful that 1986 Mets team was, as they literally pulverized any team that got in there way on their way to a...

Mets Rumors: The Bourn Supremacy

Michael Bourn Rumors: A source tells Marc Carig of Newsday (on Twitter) that the MLBPA could file a grievance on the Michael Bourn/compensatory draft pick issue, even if the Mets don't agree to terms with the outfielder first. There has been talk of the players union supporting the Mets if they choose to argue against having to surrender a first-round pick to sign a free agent...

Source: Mets set to sign Marcum

The New York Mets, landing their first major-league free agent this off-season, have reached agreement with right-hander Shaun Marcum, according to a major-league source. It's a one-year deal, and Marcum still must take a physical. Marcum, 31, likely will be the team's fifth starter, joining left-handers Johan Santana and Jon Niese and righties Dillon Gee and Matt Harvey...

20+ Years Of Musical Chairs In Right Field Since Strawberry Left

This was originally posted two years ago on January 11, 2011, and was written by the brilliant Ed Leyro. With all the fuss about the Mets outfield these days, I thought this was a nice reminder that at least where right field is concerned, it’s been 22 years and we still haven’t found a suitable replacement for Darryl Strawberry. So grab a hot cup of your favorite brew, pull...

Mets Rumors: Free Agent Bourn Becomes a "Realistic Possibility"

Michael Bourn has gone from barely a consideration by the Mets to a “realistic” possibility for the team’s beleaguered outfield. Now that the Braves have are in agreement to a trade for outfielder Justin Upton with the Diamondbacks, it gives the Mets the first crack to signing the speedy outfielder.. The Mets and Braves were considered the top suitors for Bourn. The Mets...

Cubs and Scott Hairston Agree On Two Year Deal

According to a report from Ken Rosenthal, the Cubs are in agreement with Scott Hairston on a two-year contract. Rosenthal indicated the deal is pending a physical and did not report the terms. Scott Hairston was reportedly looking for a two-year, $8 million contract to which the Mets balked and countered with a one year deal for $2 million. That’s where it apparently ended....

Venezuelan reports: Cedeno to join Cardinals

Two sources from Venezuela report ex-Cubs, Pirates and Mets infielder Ronny Cedeno is joining the Cardinals.

MMO Caption Contest: Win This Original 1986 Mets Score Book In Mint Condition!

WIN THIS 1986 METS OFFICIAL PROGRAM! I can assure you this is a beauty and one of over a dozen I own from that magical season. This one still has the scorecard in it and is in mint condition. I’ll be giving away a few of my other score books in the next few days, but I wanted to kick things off with this prized possession, one of my favorites. It’s my way of saying thanks for...

Will the Cardinals ride the Ronny Cedeno rollercoaster?

On Friday, CBS’ Jon Heyman reported the St. Louis Cardinals are among a group of teams interested in free agent shortstop/second baseman Ronny Cedeno. The Venezuelan, who turns 30 years of age in two weeks, first came up with the Chicago Cubs in 2005. In 2009, Cedeno was traded to Seattle then Pittsburgh. Replacing fan favorite Jack Wilson, he remained a Pirate, starting at shortstop...

Could the Mets make stealth play at signing Michael Bourn?

One the Mets’ most pressing needs are that of a legitimate leadoff hitter and centerfielder. So then it would make perfect sense for the Mets to make a run at signing Braves free-agent Michael Bourn. Obviously, the Mets have to upgrade the outfield if they want to piece together a somewhat competitive team in 2013. Lately there are reports that the Mets-despite what we have been...

Mets Gamble $4 million on Marcum

Yesterday the New York Mets agreed to a 1-year contract with former Brewers pitcher Shaun Marcum, pending a physical. Today the 31-year-old righty passed his physical and the 1-year/$4 million contract was made official. According to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, incentives could drive that price tag up to $6 million in 2013. https://twitter.com/Ken_Rosenthal/status/294858724034617344...

Rosenthal: Mets Want To Sign Bourn To Longterm Backloaded Deal

According to what a source told Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, the Mets have sincere interest in signing free-agent outfileder Michael Bourn to a long-term deal, but that any deal will likely be backloaded. I thought that was something we were getting away from because it was hazardous to our health? Backloaded deals, future annuity payments, deferred salaries, lot’s of the same...

Frozen Ropes

Scott Free Sometimes things happen because they were meant to. Sometimes things happen because there was nothing else that could happen. There were not many suitors out there who were willing to get together with Scott Hairston on a multi-year deal. The Cubs may have been the only ones. Scott should be quite comfortable in the “friendly confines” and put up some impressive offensive...
