Raise the Jolly Roger!:
Well, I’d say the Twins got sufficient revenge from the beatdown the other day in Fort Myers.
At the plate:
- The Pirates were hitless until the eighth inning. Brandon Boggs broke up the impending no-no with a single, and was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double.
- Twins starter Francisco Liriano struck out six in five innings.
On the mound:
- Charlie Morton had a rough day, allowing five runs in the second. There were some unlucky bloops/grounders along with some bad defense mixed in, but he didn’t seem sharp. He did pitch a clean 1st and 3rd.
- Evan Meek, Juan Cruz, Jared Hughes, and Tony Watson all pitched scoreless innings.
- Chris Leroux and Tim Wood combined for a dreadful eighth in which the Twins scored five more runs.

Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher A.J. Burnett took his first bullpen session since suffering a fractured right orbital bone in spring training.Burnett, who need facial surgery on March 2 after getting hit with a foul ball during bunting drills, worked out in the right-field bullpen while his teammates were on the field Saturday. Burnett is expected to miss 8-12 weeks while recovering...
The Pirates made a few more cuts this morning, including sending the scorching-hot Starling Marte down to minor league camp even though he's 13-for-25 with three homers this spring. Gorkys Hernandez, Kyle McPherson, Bryan Morris, and Justin Wilson all went down with him. There aren't really any surprises in that group; of the quintet that went down today Wilson was really...
After spending 12 days watching the Minnesota Twins in Fort Myers, I can tell you this: This team will not lose 99 games again this season.
That may not exactly be going out on a limb, since the only other time the Twins lost that many games was in 1982 when they finished 60-102. But after an injury-plagued season a year ago, Minnesota will certainly be improved from last year&...
Joe Mauer, .287 BA, 3 HRs, 30 RBIs in 2011
Mauer is a three-time batting champion and a former American League MVP. But the Minnesota Twins' star catcher was a shell of himself in 2011. Mauer batted a career-low .287 and slugged just .368, also the lowest of his eight-year career. Most notably, Mauer played in just 82 games due to numerous injuries, including...
The Minnesota Twins sent infielder Tsuyoshi Nishioka to Triple-A Rochester on Monday.
Signed to a three-year, $9.25 million contract prior to last season, the Japanese star batted just .226 with 19 RBIs in 68 contests as he adjusted to the North American style of play.
Nishioka was also hampered by injuries. He missed 59 contests with a lower left leg injury before an oblique ailment...
Justin Morneau, .227 BA, 4 HRs, 30 RBIs in 2011
Justin Morneau has only played a total of 150 games over the last two seasons combined. A concussion cut his 2010 season short -- just 81 games -- after he posted All-Star numbers. One year later, Morneau played just 69 games due to multiple ailments, including neck surgery and another concussion. In 2009, he missed...
Francisco Liriano threw five hitless innings Sunday, and the Minnesota Twins allowed just one hit in a 10-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The Pirates did not get a hit until Brandon Boggs singled off non-roster invitee Luis Perdomo in the eighth inning. Perdomo was the fourth of five Twins pitchers.
With an exception of one four-run inning in his last spring start, Liriano has...
Former First Baseman Ken Harvey is from Los Angeles, CA but like most Cali boys who graduate from Beverly Hills High School he became a Cornhusker at Nebraska. Harvey did work in college and was named an All-American and First Team Big 12 in 1999. Harvey committed Teddy Williams that year and hit .478 setting the new Big 12 batting average record. The 1999 Nebraska team was most...
FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) -- Felix Doubront's bid for a spot in Boston's starting rotation took a hit when he allowed eight hits in 4 2-3 innings Monday as the Minnesota Twins defeated the Red Sox 8-4.
