MINNEAPOLIS The Minnesota Twins didn't waste much time in signing two of their early draft picks. Second-rounder Mason Melotakis and fourth-rounder Zack Jones both signed contracts with the Twins on Friday at Target Field. Melotakis, a left-hander from Northwestern State, was taken by the Twins in the second round with the 63rd overall pick. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound Melotakis can reach the upper 90s with his fastball and said he also throws a curveball, a slider that he classifies as a slurve, and is getting the feel for his changeup. He also hopes to develop a cutter. Melotakis was taken on Day 2 of the draft, the second pick in round two on Tuesday. Three days later, he was at Target Field, putting pen to paper to make it official. "I'm ready to get going. I tried to get up here as early as I can, that way I can in the system as early as I can and get a Twins uniform on," Melotakis said. " . . . I did expect it to go quickly. I didn't expect two days....

Twins' patience in Plouffe paying dividends

MINNEAPOLIS There were times earlier this season when Minnesota's Trevor Plouffe looked lost at the plate. After going 0-for-3 in a game against Cleveland on May 14, his batting average dipped to .133. He was still drawing walks, as was evident by his .288 on-base percentage at the time, but the hits just weren't coming. Even so, the Twins didn't give up on Plouffe...

Willingham lifts Twins with walk-off hit in 10th

MINNEAPOLIS A walk-off single isn't as dramatic or exciting as a walk-off home run, although they both count just the same in the end. Within the span of nine games, Twins left fielder Josh Willingham has managed to accomplish both dramatic feats in a pair of Minnesota wins at Target Field. Friday was the latest installment, as his 10th-inning single down the left field line...

Meet the guy in the bullpen you don't know

MINNEAPOLIS Nate Dammann has been a member of the Minnesota Twins organization longer than most players on the team's 25-man roster. And though Dammann, Minnesota's bullpen catcher, isn't technically on the roster, he has become a teammate to the rest of the Twins. Dammann is in his sixth season with Minnesota after he landed the job out of college prior to the 2007...

Versatility is name of game for Twins' Carroll

The Minnesota Twins have the worst record in the American League, and they have been below .500 since Opening Day. However, outside of Jason Marquis, released from the roster after going 2-4 with an 8.37 ERA, the team's offseason acquisitions have proved to be valuable. Left fielder Josh Willingham leads the team with 11 homers and 39 RBI. Closer Matt Capps, re-signed as...

Draft picks take longer to develop in MLB

MINNEAPOLIS The 2012 Major League Baseball draft is in the books. Now what? Baseball's draft, which spans three days and lasts 40 rounds, doesn't drum up the same excitement as its counterparts in the NFL and NBA for several reasons. For starters, the football and basketball drafts don't last 40 rounds like baseball's does. The NBA's is just two rounds, the...

Twins recall 1B Parmelee, option RHP De Vries

The Minnesota Twins recalled first baseman Chris Parmelee from Triple-A Rochester on Thursday and optioned right-hander Cole DeVries. Parmelee began the year on the Twins' 25-man roster but struggled offensively. In 27 games, he hit just 179 with three RBI and 21 strikeouts. The demotion seemed to help his bat, however, as he was hitting .375.500.708 in 15 games with the Red...

Cubs-Twins Preview

While the Minnesota Twins continue to dig out of a tough start, the Chicago Cubs keep suffering difficult losses. The Cubs figure to have a tough assignment Saturday when a surging Scott Diamond gets the ball at Target Field for the Twins, who could finally have Joe Mauer back in the lineup. Minnesota (23-34) remains in last place in the AL Central, but has won eight of 10 following...
