In a post to Twitter, Ben Yoel asks: “Would you trade Daniel Murphy and Bobby Parnell for B.J. Upton?” Michael Baron: In recent years, I’ve always thought Upton should be better than he is. Over the last three years, his power and production numbers have steadily increased, but his average and on-base percentage have dramatically decreased over that span with a sharp rise in his strikeout numbers likely contributing to that. He’s also had behavioral problems in the last two years which makes me question his mental makeup as well. With that said, Upton is a natural fit defensively for the Mets as he is among the best centerfielders in the game, and he had a very strong month of September in which he helped carry the Rays past the Red Sox and into the playoffs. Also, as Sandy Alderson said the other night, the team’s defensive has to improve next year. However, the Rays seem to value defensively versatility on their roster, and Murphy isn’t exactly ...

Ramirez wants to play in 2012

Manny Ramirez reportedly would like to play again in 2012, but that would require a lot of patience. He would still have to serve a 100-game suspension for his second positive drug test.

#76: Will Jeremy Hellickson’s strikeouts come back?

Before I address the matter of Jeremy Hellickson‘s strikeouts, I’d like to take a moment to remind you that Hellickson’s 2.95 ERA was insanely lucky. If you draft him based on that number you should be ashamed of yourself. Of course, he has the talent to actually earn that ERA this season, but if Billy Beane and Moneyball taught us anything it’s that we should...

Manny seeks return to major leagues

On the same weekend Pedro Martinez announced his intention to retire, one of his most colorful and controversial teammates has decided to make a comeback. Manny Ramirez, who retired in April following a second violation of Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program, plans to resume his playing career, a major-league source told FOXSports.com. Your Morning Dump...Where Johnny Damon talks nonsense

Every morning, well most mornings and sometimes in the afternoon, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. “Terry Francona is a Hall of Fame manager,’’ said Damon. “I loved playing for him. I wish I could have played for him more years. I’m...

Preppy Bandit Rays Robber Wearing LiveStrong Bracelet Is Popped

Via the Herald-Tribune: A man wearing a Tampa Bay Rays ball cap robbed the RBC Bank on Tamiami Trail on Wednesday. A few hours later the video was released to the media, and someone recognized the robber on the TV news, alerting deputies in Sarasota that the same man was also wanted on a bank robbery charge in Hillsborough County. Robert I. Hubbard, 33, of Tampa, was arrested Thursday...

The Art of Acquiring Intangibles

Our correspondent Jordi Scrubbing is back with his latest take on all things Rays… With the annual baseball winter meetings almost upon us (and no, I am not going this year as I did in 2006 and 2010), the Rays are looking to tweak, twist, and trade their way into a better roster than they had last year. Anyone who watched them last year knows they had problems. Even though...

Damon says pinstripes would suit Ortiz

Johnny Damon had some advice for David Ortiz: Sign with the Yankees and take advantage of that right-field porch at Yankee Stadium.

He’s back? Manny Ramirez eyes return to baseball in 2012

Manny Ramirez is done with being done. After being drug tested into retirement last April, the 39-year-old slugger is planning a comeback and wants to sign with a team for the 2012 season. The news was first reported by Jon Paul Morosi of Fox Sports on Sunday afternoon: Ramirez has hired Barry Praver and Scott Shapiro as his agents and has applied for reinstatement from MLB'...

About That K-Rod Trade

Before the Mets traded Frankie Rodriguez to the Brewers for two PTBNL’s they had the fourth best bullpen in the National League. K-rod was the closer of course, with Jason  Isringhausen performing admirably as the setup man, and Bobby Parnell and Pedro Beato were thriving in lower pressure seventh inning duties. Then, as I wrote on August 19, 2011, this happened: So how...
