After a couple of shaky starts after signing a huge contract, Cole Hamels is in the zone again. Last night marked the second straight complete game shut-out for the lefty with a 4-0 win over the Miami Marlins. Hamels tossed 113 pitches, 85 of them for strikes. He allowed 7 hits and 1 walk, but no Marlin even crossed home plate. While playoff hopes for the Phillies are all but dashed, Hamels could still be in line for another big prize if he continues to pitch at this pace: the Cy Young award. This ace already has a World Series ring, a World Series and a NLCS MVP award plus 3 All-Star nods. All Hamels has left to accomplish is the Cy Young…and of course, one more World Series ring. Supporting their teammate, the Phillies offense produced 4 runs, which was plenty considering how Hamels was pitching. Juan Pierre had another 3-hit night, including a triple and an RBI. Domonic Brown, John Mayberry Jr. and Kevin Fransden had 2 hits each while Chase Utley and Erik Kratz both knocked in o...

Phillies' Hamels pitches second straight shutout

MIAMI -- Cole Hamels hasn't had much success against the Miami Marlins this year, but that changed on Monday night. Hamels pitched his second consecutive shutout, carrying the Philadelphia Phillies to a 4-0 win over the Miami Marlins. "Obviously I haven't done too well against them recently, but it's just a matter of making pitches, hitting the target, and being...

Hamels Gets 2nd Straight Shutout, Playoffs?

The Phillies have 47 games to play and seven series against teams with winnings records. They might not have a shot at the postseason, but maybe they can keep things interesting and play spoiler. It might give a team a sinking feeling with a division title on the line and Cole Hamels scheduled to face them. He has been on a roll lately, throwing his second consecutive shutout in...

Cole Hamels’ Three-Pitch Strikeout of Justin Ruggiano

Cole Hamels‘ three-pitch strikeout of Justin Ruggiano during the first inning of Monday night’s Phillies-Marlins game (box) in Miami isn’t more significant than most other three-pitch strikeouts, except for that (a) it occurred on three consecutive changeups and (b) it occurred in front of the very excellent Miami center-field camera, itself particularly well-situated to capturing...

Marlins' Eovaldi to start series against Phillies

Cole Hamels showed in his most recent outing why the Philadelphia Phillies decided to invest in him while dealing away others during a disappointing campaign. His performances against the Miami Marlins this season haven't gone nearly as well. The left-hander looks to help end Philadelphia's five-game losing streak to the Marlins in the opener of a three-game series Monday...

Cole Hamels throws his second straight shutout as the Phils defeat the Marlins, 4-0.

Cole Hamels throws his second straight shutout against an NL Eastern Division opponent as the Phils beat the Marlins, 4-0. The Phils took the lead in the third as, with runners on the corners, and with one man out, Chase Utley hits an RBI double, knocking in Jimmy Rollins, who had earlier singled, then stopped at third base on Juan Pierre’s single, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead,...

Dugout Digest - worth the money

Last week, I attended a Braves-Phillies game in Philadelphia. Cole Hamels threw a complete game shutout, allowing just five hits and not allowing a Braves runner to reach second base all night. Last night, Hamels did it again, this time in Miami against the Marlins. The newly-extended ace once again threw a complete game shutout, allowing seven Marlins hits, one walk, and...

Series Preview – Carnival Goldfish

Monday, 7:10 – Cole Hamels v. Nate Eovaldi Tuesday, 7:10 – Oh no, it’s KK v. Josh Johnson Wednesday, 12:40 – Roy Halladay v. Mark Buehrle Why Carninal Goldfish? …because that fish describes this team way better than the one they are using now. Every dumb little kids loves winning a goldfish at the carnival. It swims around in that little plastic bag full of water, it...

Top Play: Giancarlo Stanton’s diving catch

Giancarlo Stanton is quickly becoming the best fielding right fielder in the National League, with amazing diving stops and web gem worthy grabs. He made another excellent grab on Monday night against the Phillies, hauling in what appeared to be a double off the bat of Erik Kratz. The Phillies went on to win the game 4-0 on a second consecutive shutout by Cole Hamels. Hamels beat...

Rollins' leadoff homer stands up as Phils blank Marlins again

MIAMI -- Kyle Kendrick wasn't attempting to be Cole Hamels, but he sure looked liked him Tuesday. Kendrick threw seven scoreless innings for the Philadelphia Phillies in a 1-0 win over the Miami Marlins. The Phillies also blanked the Marlins 4-0 on Monday, with Hamels throwing a complete game. "I'm not going to try to be Cole, I'm not Cole," Kendrick said...
