Ubaldo Jimenez, I argue, is the most frustrating starting pitcher in Major League Baseball to have on your team. Notice I didn’t say he’s the worst starter or the most ineffective. Jimenez has a lot of pitches with good movement and at one time, he was undoubtedly an ace. That, however, is not the case anymore. Instead, he’s effectively the Indians’ fifth starter, and he’s failing to keep his team in the game and taxing the bullpen. That was exactly the case in last night’s 7-5 defeat as the Red Sox repeatedly put him up against the ropes in tiny Fenway and eventually sent him to the canvas. There are certain things that you just can’t do if you want to be an effective starter at the major league level. You can’t fall behind in the count, walk more people than you strike out, give up crooked numbers in more than one inning, and run up your pitch count to 100 before the fifth inning. Ubaldo does all of these things, repeatedly. He did them all last night too (except the pitches – 99 ...

Hoynes: Tomlin out, McAllister in for tonight’s start

Josh Tomlin will miss tonight’s start against the Boston Red Sox in Fenway Park due to a sore wrist, according to The Plain Dealer’s Paul Hoynes. Tomlin, 1-2 with a 4.67 ERA in 6 games (5 starts) this season, is believed to have injured the wrist from gripping the ball too hard in his last start against the White Sox in game two of the doubleheader Tuesday. He may go on the DL...

Lowe regaining his prime form at age 38

The losingest pitcher in the National League last year is now one of the winningest pitchers in the American League. So far, the Indians are quite happy with their offseason trade for Derek Lowe. Lowe pitched six solid innings Thursday night to get the win in the Indians' 8-3 victory over Boston. Pitching in his former home park, against one of his former teams, Lowe held the...

Closer Talk: Tie Games, A Look Back to ’07, and When To Throw Your Best

Editor’s Note: Jon and I had a friendly Twitter debate over this issue on Tuesday night. Read his solid take on using Chris Perez in such a scenario. On Tuesday night, Chris Perez entered the 10th inning against the White Sox at home with the game tied at three. He exited with the White Sox leading 5-3, after allowing two runs on two hits in just his third non-save appearance...

Box Score: Red Sox 12, Indians 1

Hopefully you got your mother something nice for this Mother’s Day, because the Indians sure came empty handed. Justin Masterson got blistered with two outs in the first inning, and Dan Wheeler poured gasoline on the fire in the middle innings as the Red Sox left the Tribe feeling the need to go anywhere but Fenway after today’s 12-1 demolition, taking the last three in the series...

Box Score: Red Sox 4, Indians 1

The Indians fell victim to a rookie left-handed pitcher in Felix Doubront that kept them guessing most of the night. Felix lasted six innings, allowing the lone run on three hits, walking two and striking out five as the Red Sox took the third game of the series 4-1. Zach McAllister, who was called upon to start on short notice for the injured Josh Tomlin, pitched well enough to...

Boston fans finally cheer Damon again

Johnny Damon finally felt welcome again at Fenway Park. Damon received a hearty round of applause when video highlights of his days with the Red Sox played during Boston's 12-1 win over Cleveland on Sunday. Now a member of the Indians, Damon says it was the first warm reception he's had in Boston since he left the Red Sox after the 2005 season and signed as a free agent...

Johnny Damon Back in Indians Lineup As Daniel Bard, Justin Masterson Square Off on Mother's Day

It's been a rarity this season to see Bobby Valentine roll out the same lineup two games in a row, but that's exactly what he's doing on Sunday. The Red Sox lineup will be the same -- top to bottom -- as it was on Saturday, with Ryan Sweeney leading off and Mike Aviles once again batting ninth. Daniel Nava will also get the start for a fourth straight game. Since being...

Golf Jokes Put On Hold As Sox Beat Cleveland 7-5

The linescore may not be very pretty, but Clay Buchholz delivered what the Red Sox needed against the Cleveland Indians at Fenway Park on Friday night - a win. Buchholz pitched one out into the 7th inning and was charged with 4 runs (3 earned) on 8 hits and 3 walks (no strikeouts) in recording his 4th win of the season.Cleveland scored a single run in the top of the 1st but the...

5/13 Game Recap: Indians 1 - Red Sox 12

Player of the Game Pitching a perfect 8th inning with 2 strike outs, Jairo Asencio won today's Player of the game with a score of 1.50. Just a reminder, when a relief pitcher wins this award, it means that the Indians did not provide and offense and that their starting pitcher had a poor outing. Asencio has won 3 Player of the Game awards this year. Michael Brantley came in...
