Now, this is an odd one. At tonight's game between the Fort Myers Miracle and the Daytona Cubs, home plate umpire Mario Seneca ejected the Cubs organist, Derek Dye. What was Dye's offense? After a questionable call, Dye played "Three Blind Mice" on the organ, and the umpire ejected him from the game.

I've actually heard of this happening before, but that doesn't make it any less ridiculous. You want to talk about an umpire with a power trip, look no further than right here. I understand that the guy was probably irritated about fun getting poked at him in this situation, but that's just it: it's fun. You don't go to a baseball game to watch the umpires, you go to watch the players play the game and have a good time.

And for the record, if an organist is mocking you for blowing a call, it must have been a really, really bad call. From what I've heard from various people and seen with my own eyes about minor league umpires, I'm not shocked at all.

  • This umpire seriously needs to get over himself!!!! Now umpires can boot people who bruise their ego. WOW!!! IF the rules actually allow this they need to be changed. I for one find the tune a witty way to poke a little fun!!! What if he played "we're not gonna take it...?"
  • That is just ridiculous! They play similar themes at McCoy Stadium where I watch the Paw Sox (Red Sox affiliate) and the fans love it. It's all in fun, this ump was a jerk.
  • Extremely ridiculous. At hockey games, they always play Three Blind Mice when the refs come out. No one should become a game official if they can't take a little heckling. My dad is a baseball umpire and a hockey ref, and he even told me some good jeers to shout at the officials, like "You couldn't call a taxi!" This guy needs to get over himself.
