Steve McCatty on Drew Storen: "He’s a little upset"

So the Washington Post's Adam Kilgore checked in with Steve McCatty, who checked in with Drew Storen and Tyler Clippard after the Nationals signed Rafael Soriano to be their closer. Despite quotes from McCatty stating that both took the news "like professionals", reading between the lines it sounds like Storen took the news much harder than Clippard. McCatty on Storen...

Just Gio Gonzalez hanging out with Sweet Brown last night in Oklahoma City

Of all the random photos posted on Twitter/Instagram this offseason of Gio Gonzalez hanging out with random people, the photo above of Gio hanging with internet meme/sensation Sweet Brown Thursday night in Oklahoma City after accepting the Warren Spahn Award from the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame takes the cake. Pic above via @TeamSweetBrown. And so, that photo inspired a hash...

Here's Bryce Harper in a tux with neat haircut, accepting his NL Rookie of the Year award last night in NYC

So Bryce Harper and Davey Johnson were in NYC last night to receive their respective NL Rookie of the Year and Manager of the Year awards, and Davey introduced Harper to the crowd: "Well, I’m not really going to say anything good about him. His head is too big already. Nah, I’m just kidding." (Davey Johnson on Bryce Harper, via Washington Post, 1/20/2013) ...

Davey on Nationals three-headed bullpen monster: "I will go with the guy I think is best"

So MLB.com's Bill Ladson checked in with Davey Johnson on the Rafael Soriano signing, which went down while Davey was on vacation in Africa. Sounds like Davey was as surprised by the move as everyone else, and despite Mike Rizzo essentially proclaiming Soriano as the Nats closer, Davey told Ladson he'd make the call on who closes: "Things work out. I know Clip wanted...

Jordan Zimmermann and the Nationals Likely Won't Avoid Arbitration

In his first full season back (meaning no innings limits) back from injury, Jordan Zimmermann was impressive.  He underwent Tommy John surgery in 2010 and made his return in 2011.  He was on a strict innings limit similar to that of Stephen Strasburg's last season.  In 2012, he was allowed to just pitch and he did well. Because Zimmermann did so well, he may be looking...

Player Profile #141: Dan Haren | SP | WAS

At 32 years old, Dan Haren is in decline. Thirty-two isn’t very old in today’s game, what with recent advancements in strength, conditioning, and nutrition, but no amount of (legal) supplements and training is going to make a player immune to the effects of wear and tear. And boy, has Haren been worn down. From 2005-2011, Haren made 237 starts, more than any player in the game...

2012 Player-By-Player Wrap Up: Jordan Zimmermann

Throughout the offseason, The Nats Blog will look back at every player’s 2012 season to summarize and analyze his performance, and we’ll look ahead to his possible role in 2013. We’ll go from #1 Steve Lombardozzi all the way to #63 Henry Rodriguez until Spring Training. Enjoy. People expected big things in 2012 from Jordan Zimmermann after a successful, albeit abbreviated...

Nats, Detwiler avoid arbitration with $2.3M deal

The Washington Nationals have agreed to a $2,337,500, one-year deal with left-handed starter Ross Detwiler, avoiding arbitration. Detwiler earned $485,000 last season, when he went 10-8 with a 3.40 ERA in 33 appearances, including 27 starts, for the NL East champion Nationals. Washington also avoided salary arbitration with right-handed reliever Craig Stammen by agreeing to a two...
