Struggling Arizona Diamondbacks right fielder Justin Upton is out of the lineup for the second straight night and the third time in five games.
Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson is giving Upton time off in hopes of jolting the slugging outfielder out of a sluggish start to the season.
Fourth in the NL MVP voting last year, Upton is hitting .243 and has four hits in his last 24 at-bats after going 0-for-4 against Colorado Monday night.
Gerardo Parra, an NL Gold Glove winner last season, has played well in Upton's place, including a four-hit game with a homer Tuesday night against the Rockies.
Upton appeared to be bothered that he didn't play in Tuesday's 10-0 win over the Rockies, but Gibson had him out of the lineup again Wednesday night.

PHOENIX Almost exactly a year ago, Kirk Gibson and Don Baylor met with Justin Upton to reinforce a simple message: he did not need to carry the weight of the team on his shoulders. Upton took it to heart and ran with it to a career year and fourth-place finish in the NL MVP balloting.

The Diamondbacks won the 2011 National League West in large part because of timely hitting, a strong bullpen and a major league-best 48 comeback victories, all driven by career years from a half-dozen major contributors. The D-backs are struggling to get over .500 this season because many of those years have not been repeated, although injuries to key components cannot be discounted...

Ken Kendrick, Diamondbacks managing partner, recently called out two of the team’s stars. Justin Upton and Stephen Drew were lambasted by Kendrick on XTRA 910 AM in Phoenix. In Upton’s case, Kendrick criticized him for being inconsistent.
