Phillies' All Star 2nd Baseman Chase Utley has re-joined the Phillies to continue his rehab.

After a 7-1 drubbing to the Washington Nationals has the Phillies 5.5 games out of first place, the Phillies will try to avoid a sweep today. This series against the first place Nationals has not gone as planned. But there is some good news. Phillies All Star 2nd baseman Chase Utley has rejoined the team.

Utley told reporters yesterday that he continues to be able to hit without any pain in his knees. Utley has been rehabbing in Arizona with a specialist. While the fact that he can hit without pain is a good sign, it’s only half of his game.

The other half is of course, fielding his position. Being out in the field is also where Chase Utley’s knees will take the most pounding. In order to work on that part of his game, Utley will likely join teammate Ryan Howard in Clearwater.

There is still no timetable for either man’s return, but the fact that there is at least some progression has to be seen as hopeful.

Depending on how Utley’s knees respond to his duty out in the field, we could see him back with the Phillies in a few weeks. Last year, Utley’s time in Clearwater was limited to just under two weeks. Utley could depart for Clearwater as the end of this week.
