PHILADELPHIA - Jordany Valdespin gave his mom an early Mother's Day present. Valdespin's pinch-hit three-run homer off Jonathan Papelbon in the ninth inning was his first hit in the majors, and it led the New York Mets to a 5-2 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies Monday night. "I called my mom before the game and said if I get in the game I'd get a hit for her," Valdespin said. "It was a great moment for me. I'm really happy. They celebrated with me and poured ice and beer all over me." David Wright's two-run double off Phillies starter Roy Halladay tied the game in the sixth, and the Mets beat Papelbon (0-1) to hand him his first loss with the Phillies. Valdespin, a 24-year-old infielder, was called up before the game to replace injured shortstop Ruben Tejada. Valdespin was 0-for-6 in his career before hitting a deep shot to right field. "It will give him great confidence, especially hitting it off a pitcher like Papelbon,...

Valdespin’s First Big League Hit, Homer, Lifts Mets Over Phils Late

Wow.  If you missed tonight’s game, you really missed something, to say the least… The Mets won 5-2 tonight on the strength of Jordany Valdespin‘s first big league hit, which also happened to be his first big league pinch-hit, and his first big league homer.  Oh, and it was of the three-run variety, in the ninth inning off Jonathan Papelbon.  For my money this was by far...

Rookie Jordany Valdespin Belts A Pinch Hit Home Run In Mets 5-2 Comeback Win

Rookie Jordany Valdespin delivers a pinch hit three-run homer to put the Mets up 5-3. Recap Jon Niese had himself another good start despite only going five innings and being plagued with four walks. Post Game: Deja Valdespin- Pap Allows Game Winning Blast in 9th

The New York Mets (16-13) defeated the Philadelphia Phillies (14-16) tonight behind the most unlikely of circumstance. Jordany Valdespin Rings The Bell, Josh Thole Gets His Bell Rung: A Fun Night In Philly

“Baseball is a game of redeeming features.” – Bob Murphy This was shaping up to be a horrible night. Jonathon Niese gave up a couple of runs early. Normally, this isn’t cause for alarm, dread, or despair, except for two reasons: first of all, it’s Niese’s third start out of the past four where that’s happened and number two, the Mets were facing Roy Halladay...

Just When We Needed An Unsung Hero…

In Doug’s Dugout today, we talk about unsung heroes, dropping like flies, and other moronic thoughts: My primary thrust today was focusing on replacing Mike Pelfey’s innings (the Chris Schwinden experiment failed), but then Mike Nickeas and Jordany Valdespin had the audacity to interrupt me with last night’s heroics against the Phillies. How dare they! Sometimes it is the unsung...
