Bobby Valentine says he's not sure what it will be like to manage the Boston Red Sox against the New York Yankees, and Don Zimmer says he's not giving him any advice. Valentine and Zimmer, a former Red Sox skipper and Yankees coach, were among a group of baseball stars who showed up at the Mohegan Sun casino on Friday for the Connecticut Sports Foundation's annual charity dinner to benefit cancer research. Former Yankee greats Goose Gossage and Yogi Berra also were there. Joe Girardi was expected, but didn't meet with the media. Valentine, a Stamford native, says those are the guys who know what the rivalry is, and he's just looking forward to learning about it.

Player Profile #62: Kevin Youkilis | 3B | BOS

Kevin Youkilis is the epitome of the high-risk/high-reward pick because if healthy he’s a top five third baseman. Of course, health hasn’t really been his “thing” the last two seasons, missing 102 combined games. It’s kept him from his usual 25 homers and 90 RBI and in 2011 his batting average fell to .258. At 33, his best years are definitely behind him, but that’s...

In Defense of a Straight Salary Dump

The following is being syndicated from The Yankee Analysts. It seems all but inevitable that A.J. Burnett will be toeing the rubber in PNC Park come April, and my feelings are surprisingly mixed on the subject. While I do genuinely believe that he may be the best option of the fifth starter triumvirate (mostly due to the higher beta of Phil Hughes and the blase nature of Freddy Garcia...

Why Do The Pirates Want A.J. Burnett?

First of all, yes, I’ll admit it: I’m eating my words right now. After writing my aggressively-headlined “Good Luck Shopping A.J. Burnett, Yanks” piece on Wednesday, it turns out the Yankees have found at least one potential suitor for Burnett in the Pirates. The two sides are still haggling over how much money the Yankees should eat, but considering the Yankees’ incentive...

Former Red Sox player admits to cocaine use before games

In the 80s people had mustaches to catch cocaine that didn't make it up their nose. If you think the 2011 Boston Red Sox had serious problems eating fried chicken and drinking beer in the clubhouse, a former Sox pitcher made news yesterday that makes beer and chicken seem like child's play. Dennis "Oil Can" Boyd admitted to Jonny Miller of WBZ NewsRadio...

Ageless Jeter first in camp — again — lending his guidance as he preps for stellar 2012

TAMPA — The youngest Yankees are spread over the four fields at the team’s minor league complex for pre-spring training workouts. Derek Jeter, the Yankees’ oldest position player, is here, too, just like every other early February for the past 20 years. It’s the Old Man and the Sea...

Does AJ Burnett make sense for the Pirates?

The New York Yankees and Pittsburgh Pirates are talking about New York sending embattled starter AJ Burnett to the Pirates. The key hangup is salary, as Burnett is due $33 million over the next two seasons. The Yankees are looking to split the salary evenly, but the last report from Pittsburgh indicates that the Pirates are willing to eat about $11 million of Burnett's contract...

A.J. Burnett Rumors: Friday

Here is the latest on the A.J. Burnett rumors: -Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports that the two sides continue discussing a possible deal that would send Burnett to the Pirates. Heyman reports that the Yankees are willing to pay a substantial portion of Burnett’s remaining salary, but that the two sides are still a few million apart. Heyman mentions that the Yankees first offered...

Friday A.J. Burnett update

From Jon Heyman: The Yankees and Pirates are continuing to talk about a possible A.J. Burnett trade that could lead to more activity in the form of a couple free-agent signings by the Yankees. As of Thursday night, the teams were thought to be a few million apart in the Burnett negotiations, but they were still talking and there is some hope for a deal. Heyman also goes on to...

Daniel Bard:Scouting Report

Red Sox pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training on February 19th and one of the hot topics besides Bobby Valentine will be Daniel Bard’s transfer from the bullpen to a prominent role as the Red Sox #4 starter in the rotation. There are many questions surrounding this move and most of them have fans feeling skeptical about whether this will work. Fans of the Nation are...
