After dominating the Royals in his previous four starts against them, Tigers ace Justin Verlander was roughed up for 8 runs in 5 2/3rds innings in a 9-8 loss to Kansas City Tuesday night from Kauffman Stadium. In fact tonight was historic for Verlander as the 8 runs equaled the most he’s ever given up in his major league career.
The last time he surrendered as many runs as he did tonight was April 6th, 2009 during a 12-5 loss to Toronto.
The Tigers quickly took a 3-0 lead in the first inning thanks to an Andy Dirks double that scored Austin Jackson and a Delmon Young two run home run, Verlander quickly squandered the lead in the next half inning. After a Billy Butler RBI single, Mike Moustakas’ 2 RBI single tied things up at three. From there the flood gates opened as the Royals continued to hit the lights out increasing their lead to 7-3 by the end of the second inning.
When it was all said and done for Verlander he allowed 8 runs on 12 hits, walking 3 and striking out six.
