The Detroit Sports Site:
Alex Avila has struggled all season to get his average above .200, but he continues to deliver key hits for the Detroit Tigers. The latest came Monday night, when Avila blasted an opposite-field, three-run homer in the ninth inning off Cleveland closer Chris Perez, giving Detroit a clutch 4-2 victory.

Avila’s homer set off a jubilant celebration in the Tigers’ dugout, with Prince Fielder even picking up Victor Martinez. Joaquin Benoit closed out the game in the bottom of the ninth, pushing Detroit’s AL Central lead to four games.
Just last week, Avila delivered a victory over the Washington Nationals on a grand slam off Stephen Strasburg. He also had a bomb in the ninth inning at Houston earlier this season, off new teammate Jose Veras, to turn a loss into a win there.

The Tigers already had a replacement for Jhonny Peralta at shortstop. It turns out they might already have a replacement for his bat, too.
Peralta was among 12 players who accepted a 50-game suspension from Major League Baseball Monday due to his connection to the Biogenesis Clinic.
Last week the Tigers acquired slick-fielding shortstopthird baseman Jose Iglesias, 23, to protect...
Jhonny Peralta's 50-game suspension was hardly a surprise, as it was more of a case of when than if it would happen. As such, the Detroit Tigers had time to prepare, and they took advantage of that opportunity by acquiring young shortstop Jose Iglesias from the Boston Red Sox in a recent three-team trade. While at one point it appeared to be a near sure bet that Peralta would...
DETROIT Jhonny Peralta, his 50-game suspension becoming official on Monday, is going.
Jose Iglesias, obtained from the Boston Red Sox in a blockbuster three-team deal, is here to take his place.
What will this mean for the Detroit Tigers in the months and years ahead?
Quite simply, it means that a middle infield in question just became much more defined. Both Peralta and Tigers...
Detroit Tigers All-Star shortstop Jhonny Peralta has apologized for a 50-game suspension he received from Major League Baseball.
Peralta was one of 13 players disciplined Monday for his relationship to Biogenesis of America, a closed anti-aging clinic in Florida accused of distributing banned performing-enhancing drugs.
In a statement released by the Tigers, Peralta said in '...
Why are the Detroit Tigers in first place?
Is it a team effort? Starting rotation?
Joaquin Benoit and Drew Smyly in the bullpen? Miguel Cabrera and Max Scherzer? Their top-five payroll?
Dave Dombrowski’s offseason and in-season moves? Jim Leyland’s managing? The farm system?
What is the main reason the Tigers are the best team in baseball?
The general manager...
On Monday afternoon I had the opportunity to talk Detroit Tigers on The Drive With Jack Ebling radio show, 730 a.m. out of Lansing. We discussed the Jhonny Peralta suspension and its impact on the team as well as the A-Rod situation.

Curious about what former big leaguer Magglio Ordonez has been up to since his retirement following the 2011 season?
Well...wonder no more.
Turns out, the six-time All-Star is planning on representing the socialist party of the late President Hugo Chavez and run for mayor of Puerta La Cruz, a Venezuelan oil town.
“We invite our major leaguer, Magglio Ordonez, to hit...

The Cleveland Indians, who are still in a division race despite what many think, have placed Corey Kluber on the DL. They have recalled Matt Langwell from Triple-A to take Kluber's roster spot. Kluber suffered a finger sprain earlier in the week, and it is not healing quickly enough, resulting in the DL move.

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Justin Verlander dominated for eight innings and Don Kelly hit a three-run homer off Justin Masterson, leading the Detroit Tigers to their 10th straight win, 5-1 over the Cleveland Indians.
Verlander (12-8) allowed one run and four hits as the Tigers beat the Indians for 10th time in 11 games and opened a five-game lead over Cleveland in the AL Central.
The weekend series in Miami was kind of glossed over coming in. The Indians arrived in Little Havana with an eight-game winning streak and all kinds of momentum. They knew they had the first place Detroit Tigers coming to Cleveland on Monday, and a let down against the Marlins, one of baseball’s worst teams, could have easily occurred. With the DH not in play this weekend (more...
Scott Raab and I went on an audio journey this evening. It started very focused on Cleveland sports, but once we hit the Plain Dealer topic, things went all over the place. Enjoyed it just the same.

That's what to do.
It's not that big a deal.
The Indians are playing out of their mind, winning 10 out of 11 games before tonight, and hey, it's August 5th and we are only three games out.
Well, were three games out. But with...
