JUPITER, Fla. (AP) -- Adam Wainwright struggled for 4 2-3 innings Wednesday in his final tuneup against big league hitters as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Detroit Tigers 9-5. Wainwright, coming off reconstructive surgery on his right elbow that sidelined him for the entire 2011 season, had pitched 16 innings without allowing an earned run this spring before the Tigers broke through. Wainwright allowed four runs, three of them earned, on six hits and a walk. His final outing before opening day is expected to be against Cardinals minor leaguers. Jhonny Peralta broke a scoreless tie with an RBI single in the third. Andy Dirks later hit a two-run single.

Smyly Solid Against Cardinals Lineup

JUPITER, FLA. (AP) Before St. Louis' 9-5 victory over Detroit on Wednesday, pitcher Adam Wainwright felt he was ready for the start of the season. After allowing four runs - three earned - in 4 2/3 innings, Wainwright welcomed an upcoming outing against Cardinals minor leaguers as a final tune-up for the regular season.

Detroit Tigers near d-day with 3 major roster decisions

The Detroit Tigers have solved virtually nothing regarding their tough roster decisions as the final cut downs loom. This is probably a good thing as it leads one to believe that the competition is stiff enough to require as many looks as possible by management before levying a decision. Left field is still up for grabs, Brandon Inge is still confusing things at 2nd base, and a 5th...

New-look Cardinals poised for strong 2012

The defending World Series Champions will embark on their title defense April 4 in Miami when they take center stage against the new-look Marlins. But the Cardinals have a different appearance to them as well with future Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa retired, pitching coach Dave Duncan on a leave of absence and slugger Albert Pujols gone to Anaheim. Pitcher Adam Wainwright...

Cardinals purchase reliever Linebrink

Courtesy: Cardinals Media Relations JUPITER, Fla. - The St. Louis Cardinals announced this morning that they have purchased the contract of non-roster reliever Scott Linebrink and added him to the team's 40-man Major League roster. Linebrink, 35, has played 12 seasons in the majors with San Francisco, Houston, San Diego, Milwaukee, Chicago White Sox and Atlanta. The righty...

MLB Preview – St. Louis Cardinals

2011 Review: 2011 was a strange year for the Cardinals. They went from out of the playoffs in August to winning the wild card on the last day of the season. They capped that by winning the World Series. The team definitely had problems. They lost ace Adam Wainwright to Tommy John Surgery during Spring Training. They had issues between Colby Rasmus and Tony LaRussa (again); this...

Report: Magglio Ordonez close to retirement

It wasn’t an official announcement, but Magglio Ordonez is probably close to having a press release of some sort to announce his retirement from baseball, as it is becoming more and more unlikely that the Tigers, or any team for that matter, will opt not sign him to a Major League deal. He has already gone on record as saying he will not accept a minor league contract. Ordonez...

MLB Scouting Notes: Freese's Upside

Unless you followed the Cardinals closely in 2011, you likely got your first real introduction to David Freese during the postseason. The follow-up question you may be asking is what can Freese do for an encore? And, will he be as good long term as his October performance would indicate?

Carlos Beltran Pays For A Nosejob

Having bags full of money won’t make you happy, but it can buy your teammates new noses.  Yesterday it was announced that Carlos Beltran, the new St. Louis Cardinals outfielder had made a 10K payment to former Mets teammate Jon Niese for a nosejob Beltran had promised to pay for. And yes, you read that right, Beltran paid for Niese’s nosejob. I assume this whole situation...

Carlos Beltran Pays For Ex-Teammate’s Nose Job

Carlos Beltran is a man of his word. Last year when he and former teammate Jon Niese were playing for the New York Mets, Beltran jokingly offered to pay for a nose job for Niese after overhearing him talk about getting surgery. This past October, Niese went through with the procedure and Beltran, now with the St. Louis Cardinals, is honoring his word and paying the $10,000 bill...

Baseball’s Greatest Games: 2011 World Series – Game 6 Blu-ray Giveaway

In Game 6 of the 2011 World Series, on the edge of elimination, the St. Louis Cardinals trailed...

Beltran's homer not enough for Cardinals

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) Anibal Sanchez put to rest any questions about the Miami Marlins' rotation. Sanchez allowed a run in five innings, including Carlos Beltran's second homer, and the Miami Marlins beat the St. Louis Cardinals 3-1 Thursday. Sanchez had been limited to three starts this spring because of a sore shoulder. He gave up two hits and a walk. Matt Holliday walked...

Jackson hits inside-the-park HR in loss

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) -- Austin Jackson hit an inside-the-park home run and Brennan Boesch also homered for the Detroit Tigers before the Houston Astros rallied for a 14-7 win Tuesday. Both Detroit homers came off Houston starter Wandy Rodriguez, who gave up five runs in six innings. Brian Bogusevic hit a two-run homer and a double for the Astros. Jose Altuve had three hits and...

This year's Phillies face a daunting task

Roy Oswalt is no longer a part of the Phillies' rotation and this spring has been one injury after another for the Phillies. Odds are that stretching their division titles to six straight will be tougher than it was to get to five straight.
