Raise the Jolly Roger!:
RAISE IT! The Bucs are on the board in 2013 thanks to a stellar pitching display by Wandy Rodriguez and the bullpen. They shut out the Cubs, allowed just two hits, and hey – the Bucs actually put up a few runs of their own!
Rodriguez was truly excellent, which was awesome to see in his first start of the year. One reason the Pirates may be better than last year is the fact that they’ll have a full season of Wandy as opposed to two months of him. This is a guy that can consistently work his way into the late innings of a game while getting a bunch of quick outs. Tonight he did just that (many of them via the pop-up or fly-out, which is unconventional for him), cruising through the first six innings with just one hit and one walk. He was mixing his pitches extremely well and had the Cubs very much off balance all night.

BEST OF MAXIM
Last season the Pittsburgh Pirates finished last in the National League with 73 stolen bases. Andrew McCutchen led the club with 20 stolen bases, but that was down from 23 in 2011. So far this season, McCutchen has two stolen bases in as many games and said being more aggressive while on base has been a point of emphasis for him entering the 2013 season.
Andrew McCutchen has two...
The 2013 minor league season begins on Thursday. In the days leading up to the opener, I will be previewing the full season affiliates of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Here is a look at the 2013 Altoona Curve, who will feature top prospect Jameson Taillon on their Opening Day roster.
C – Carlos Paulino
1B – Matt Curry
2B – Jarek Cunningham
SS – Gift Ngoepe
3B – Stefan...
Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle addressed the status of several of the team’s injured pitchers prior to today’s game against the Chicago Cubs.
Francisco Liriano threw off a mound yesterday and Charlie Morton threw a simulated game today, Hurdle said.
“All our guys are making progress,” he said.
Jeff Karstens is still nursing an inflamed right shoulder. Hurdle said...
Yesterday was Opening Day of the 2013 Pittsburgh Pirates minor league season. All four full-season affiliates opened their schedule last night and all four ended up on the losing end. Tonight marks the season debut for top prospect Gerrit Cole, but he isn’t the only interesting pitcher going today. Nick Kingham and Clay Holmes will also get their first start today, they were...
The list of things that I don't really understand in baseball is infinite, but somewhere near the top of it is this: the veteran pitcher who's out on the mound and not quite pitching like himself, but still has things so completely under control that you never really doubt him. That was Wandy Rodriguez on Wednesday night against the Cubs. Rodriguez is mostly a ground ball...
Former Pirate minority owner Jay Lustig gave an interview to the Tribune Review in a story that was published late last night in which he gave some perspective on Bob Nutting's reign as owner of the Pirates. I'd recommend reading the whole thing, but the key passage is this:
“If you are a small-market franchise, if you want to win, you have to be willing to lose...
Maury Brown of Biz of Baseball had an article today talking about why the DH is likely coming to the National League. Brown notes that the DH seems inevitable now that there are 15 teams in each league, and interleague play all year long. He also notes some of the roadblocks, such as the fact that adding a DH to the National League will drive up total salaries. Brown finished by...
Cubs (1-1) at Pirates (1-1)
12:35 PM–PNC Park, Pittsburgh
TV: ROOT, WGN
It’s a matinee rubber match today at PNC, as the Bucs and Cubs square off on getaway day. ROOT Sports didn’t pick up several of these games in the past, but it appears that they’re broadcasting everything they can this year. The game is also on WGN, so out of town folks may be able to...
One of the things that I hate the most about April baseball is this sentence: "I know it's early, but ..." followed by a complaint about whatever pre-season concern they had. The Pirates offense has looked terrible in three games against the Cubs this week and it's been a little depressing to see, but they were also three games played in a freezing cold Pittsburgh...
Did the Cubs win yesterday?
Minor League In
Cubs signed Donnie Murphy to a minor-league deal. He's a better option than Edwin Maysonet or Alberto Gonzalez in my opinion. Hopefully he never sniffs our major league roster, but if Barney is out for an extended period, you could do worse than Murphy (of course, you could do better).
Minor League Out
Cubs lost Robert Whitenack...
Apparently licking your fingers is the appropriate response to giving up runs in the bottom of the 9th.
Since it’s going to happen pretty much every night, we’ll continue to highlight the ****** relief performance of the night. (I think we need a name for it). Tonight’s winner was Carlos Marmol. Yes, yes. He did actually record a save. But check out the stat line...
Iowa, Daytona and Kane County released their rosters for the 2013 season on Monday, followed by Tennessee on Tuesday. Boise will release its roster as a later date as its season does not start until June, as will the AZL team based in Mesa and the Dominican and Venezuelan summer league squads.

Baseball season’s underway, and this is the first night with fifteen full games on the slate as every team was in action. Unfortunately the Cubs lost, but you can’t win them all anyway. Thankfully, you can’t lose them all either, no matter how hard you try. The rubber match is tomorrow and once we get past all the home openers, we’ll no longer have that stupid random...
