Though the Washington Nationals have a multitude of needs this offseason, Center Field is not one of them. The Nationals have a surplus of Center Fielder’s in the Major League and Minor League levels, and do not plan on adding any in the near future. Here, is why they should at least consider moving someone that is currently on the roster. At the moment, Denard Span is the starting Center Fielder for the Nationals. As he is only 29 years old, it appears that he has at least a few more years left in the tank. Waiting behind him are both Eury Perez and Brian Goodwin. Perez spent parts of last year with both the AAA Syracuse Sky Chiefs and the Major League club. Goodwin played most of his season with the AA Harrisburg Senators. Both of these players are 23 years old, Goodwin however, is the player with the higher ceiling. Goodwin is a more raw talent, and therefore, is at a lower level of the minors. In the future, it is believed Goodwin will overtake Perez as the organizations top Center Fielder as Goodwin was the Nationals second ranked prospect for a good portion of last season. Eury Perez For teams looking for short term gain in a trade with the Nationals, Eury Perez would be the better acquisition. Perez has Major League experience, and his tools are more polished. This works out best for the Nationals, as they are not in dire need of a Center Fielder at the moment. With a plethora of Center Fielders within the organization, the only logical solution seems to be trading one of them. It certainly will not be Span, as he is the Center Fielder of the present. Between Perez and Goodwin, Goodwin most likely will be the more talented player in the future and should be kept for that time. Leaving Perez as the odd man out, the best decision would be to trade him and improve in an area of need. What Mike Rizzo will do we do not know, but he should take action in the near future.
