When Jered Weaver felt a sharp pain in his lower back during the first inning of his May 28 start against the Yankees, the Los Angeles Angels had reason to be concerned about how long they might be without their ace. Those concerns have been assuaged, and Weaver could be back in the rotation early next week. The lanky right-hander threw a full bullpen session off the mound Tuesday before the Angels' 5-2 loss at Dodger Stadium, and he said he felt great. He will throw another bullpen session Friday, and he'll possibly pitch in a simulated-game situation as well. If no issues arise, that could put Weaver on track to come off the disabled list and pitch during the Angels' series against the San Francisco Giants in Anaheim next week. "I really haven't felt it since two days after that start," Weaver said. "We just figured it was better to be safe than sorry (and go on the DL)." Off days this Thursday and next Thursday give the Angels some flex...

Trout continues to come up big for Angels

LOS ANGELES At some point, the superlatives are going to sound trite. How many times can you say good things about Mike Trout without going over the top, without anointing him The Next Great Player in the game? Every time he does something special, it becomes a challenge to describe his talent, to put into words his enormous baseball skills. He's been compared to Mickey Mantle...

When is enough finally enough with Ervin Santana?

I got four words for you, probably the same four words that have been running through your mind most of this season. Ervin Santana. Job Stability. Can anyone really be surprised at what's going on with Ervin Santana and his absolutely disastrous year so far? Early in the season this kind of pitching from him was tolerable, as funny as that is to say about a pitcher who gave...

Can one swing turn Aybar's season around?

LOS ANGELES Wednesday was beginning to look like just another miserable night at the plate for Erick Aybar -- and there have been too many of them this season. Pop fly, double play grounder, fly ball out. Aybar's batting average had fallen to .218 by the time he came to bat in the ninth inning at Dodger Stadium. There was no reason to think this would be any different. But...

What if Trout and Harper are better than the Three Bite Rule?

When my grandfather passed away last spring, the family had to clear out and sell the wonderful little house in northern Virginia that he had lived in (with my grandmother, until 2008) since sometime in the sixties. Among the few things that I ended up with, being the baseball guy, was my pick of whatever I thought was salvageable of a large, worn stack of sports magazines that had...

Fantasy Baseball Daily Fix, June 11th, 2012: Mark Trumbo Is Swinging For The Fences

Mark Trumbo (credits below) Mark Trumbo simply continues to tear the cover off of the ball for the Angels.  The big man went 2-for-3 from the plate on Sunday and knocked his 13th and 14th homers out of the park to go along with 6 RBI on the night.  Over the past 14 days Trumbo has been the 3rd best fantasy player according to Yahoo!, and he's got multi position eligibility...

No excuses for Angels in loss to Dodgers

LOS ANGELES The easy thing would have been to blame everything on a blown umpire's call. If the Angels get the call they need, the eighth inning is over and a one-run lead is preserved. Andre Ethier doesn't come to the plate. Juan Rivera doesn't come to the plate. The inning ends. But that's why baseball is such an interesting -- and confounding -- game. One play...

Mike Trout's Prayer

For those of you who know me personally, I am not a religious man.  I don't think I've actually prayed for anything since I was a little boy.  However, I now have a prayer to call my own.  A prayer to my personal lord and savior Mike Trout.  It goes a little something like this: Our Trout who art in center (and sometimes left or right),hallowed be thy name.Thy MVP will...

Pujols, Trout keep it going for Angels

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly rolled the dice and Albert Pujols made him pay. The Angels had Mike Trout on second base representing the go-ahead run in the ninth inning with Pujols at the plate and first base open, but Mattingly decided against walking him and pitching to cleanup hitter Mark Trumbo. Pujols muscled a broken-bat single into left field with two outs in the top of...

Game Recap 6/12/12: Dee-nied - Dodgers 5, Angels 2

What is with the Angels getting screwed over on blown calls on tag plays involving Dee Gordon?  Last June, the Dodgers stole a victory from the Halos on a bad call on a play at the plate where Dee Gordon was called safe despite the video evidence to the contrary.  Tonight, it happened again, only at second base this time. While the call in last year's game was debatable, tonight...
